Background

Max's mother was a med tech and his father a mechanic who died in an accident when he was very young. A curious and sneaky child, he enjoyed watching and learning from others — anyone who would teach him, and some who didn't know they were being observed. He grew up with Quinn and the two were friends up until he ended up killing a worker named Duggart when he was 13 and was sent to the Sky Box. There, he became brooding and silent, rarely speaking while he waited for the inevitability of his 18th birthday.

Description

Standing about 5'10" tall, Max is of average height with dark brown hair cut short in the back and just a little bit longer at the top. He has an athletic build and it's clear that he is no stranger to physical activity. Blue eyes, however, seem hardened and cold. He is dressed in a long-sleeved drab green knit shirt with a few holes here and there, frayed at the edges. A pair of loose black pants have been stitched and re-stitched a few times. A pair of black boots have been well-worn, the soles growing thin from use. A lightweight charcoal grey jacket is left to hang open, serving to break the wind and give a bit of warmth.

Known Associates

Samantha Quinn : Love. The two grew up together until Max went to the Sky Box for killing a man when he was thirteen. She is what kept him going for those five years in the box. Whatever their fate might be in this new future, it's going to be together.

Reno Loden : Little brother by only a year, Reno had to be hidden, had to be kept safe. Max would bring him bits of tech to fiddle with so that the boy genius could learn how to fix and put things together, that was, until Max got boxed. Now they're on the ground together and have a second chance at the relationship that they didn't get to have.

Lucian Grey : Hunting buddy. Natural leader. Max has a respect for Grey and his intentions, his ideas, and while he might not always agree with him — he believes that Grey genuinely has the best interests of the camp in mind.

Hanne Keats : Herb Gathering and Hunting Buddy. She seems to know more about Earth Studies than he does, and so he looks to her to help him with making sure that his identification of plants and herbs that he has gathered are as beneficial as he thinks they are. Two heads are better than one when it comes to these sorts of things. She doesn't focus on the fighting, but on discovery.

Cameron Scott : Infuriatingly reasonable and correct in the face of anger. Said a lot of things Max didn't want to hear but knew were true. Max thinks Cameron's ideas might be a little too idealistic for the reality of the situation, but it doesn't mean that there isn't merit to them. He respects Cameron, even when he doesn't agree with him.

Fiona Kattegat : Latrine Digging Buddy. It's dirty work but someone's got to do it. She's not afraid to dive in and get her hands (and everything else) dirty. Practical, straight-forward. He doesn't mind working on projects with her. She's been making inroads with the Grounders and seems to be doing a pretty good job of acting as a liason with them.

Morgan Blackwood : Autonomy and freedom, two things that some of the delinquents want to maintain even after those from the Ark arrive on the ground. Max agrees that they need to be certain that they won't all return to some kind of Box, that things won't go back to being the same as they were on the Ark. If they could only get everyone to stop yelling at each other and start talking to one another.

Cole Menge : Mouth like a sailor but sharp, smart, and has a lot of good ideas for projects that need to get done. Master of the Wall. Surprised Max by how eloquently he interacted with Oxfor when the steheda first came to the Delinquent Camp, earning him a greater respect.

Niner : Niner was in the Box even longer than Max was, which means that Max paid attention to the way that the big guy managed himself around the others. He watched him defend some of the others against bullies over the years. Good to have around in a fight. Better if he doesn't bleed to death. Patched him up after the ambush to rescue Quinn and the others.

Faolan Greery : Pretty scary in battle. Wasn't expecting the blind berserker rage there.

Gertie Black : Friends when they were kids. Max never expected to see her in the Box. A lot has changed since those days, and Max isn't even sure who the old Max, or the new Max is at this point. Hopefully he'll figure it out. Maybe she'll help him.

Lark Wood : Took the journey out to the dropship crash site and lived to make it back. Seems friendly, sociable, and good company to have on a long walk.

Phillip Oscar Wylde, Jr. : Talks a lot. A LOT. No, really. But he's a good sort, willing to help out, and has taken a few shots for the team. Comic relief.

Shiva "Shi" Lyne Retter : What Max was doing hanging around with a Councilor's grand-daughter back before he got boxed is anyone's guess, but it seems that they were friend. Shi helped to look after Reno when Max got boxed and was his only connection to his brother while he was in there.

Tabitha Imogen Nimue Kinsey : She and Reno are kind of adorkable, the way that they get all excited about science, and she gave Reno a birthday present. Seems sweet. People who are good to Reno are good in Max's book.

Madelyn Petrie : They met in the Box and talked from time to time. One of the few people who talked to him there and got to know him at all. Seamstress, mender of poorly constructed bags.
