Camp Grounds

With the removal of underbrush and a half-dozen small trees, there is now a tiny clearing around the dropship. It has begun to fill with detritus from the ship, including all of the seating, padding, and removable plates or bulkheads.

Several tents have been set up within the clearing, set close together within the confines of the surrounding trees. A small collection of weapons sits under a parachute-cloth shelter by the door of dropship, open for community use. A three-holer latrine is set up downwind of camp in the prevailing breezes, and a rough wall stretches between trees at the edge of the clearing, dropship plates and felled tree-trunks stacked up and lashed together as best as the Delinquents can manage. There is a gate at the north end, a single panel that can be rolled aside at need.

The forest immediately surrounding the camp has been cowed into near-silence, but is still vibrant and green to a people used to stark metal bulkheads all around them.

Day 22

Kai had to take off, but whatever she was up to, whoever she was dealing with, the lean girl abandons that when it looks like the trader might leave before she has an opportunity to catch him, stopping in gesturing and squinting at a paper with one of the guys on the wall in order to come hop down off the walk and beeline towards the trader with determination.

Bruns is near the gate. He's just securing a few more bits and bobs against his person and is preparing to heft an awkward pack onto his back. He blinks at the young woman making a beeline towards him. He doesn't say anything, just watches with raised eyebrows.

"Maps." is the word Kai offers, like that should explain everything, the grey-eyed girl grunts when she gets within speaking distance,"I'm serious, I want them. What is it going to cost?" offered afterwards as she comes to a halt.

Bruns doesn't heft the bag onto his back, so that's a good sign. "I told your friends what I'm looking for. Useful for useful. You got anything I can use, skaigirl? Not just pretty things. Pretty things'll get you a piece of har'takka or a couple've strips of jerky."

Kai dips her head in acknowledgment,"Useful for useful." she grunts with consideration. She is one of the few still actually wearing her band still, but it's not where her brain goes,"I have a coil of the rope we cut from the parachutes, that of interest to you?" she asks of him,"'s enough to reach the top of the ship." she specify's.

"Now you're on the right track," says Bruns with a wry note to his voice. He watches her for a moment, long enough that a person might feel slightly uncomfortable. Then his eyes flick to her wrist, then back up to her face. "Rope, bracelet. Maps, plus a bag of tomato seeds."

"Not tomatoes. Wheat? You got wheat?" Kai responds, the flat-eyed creature is used to being stared at, and seemingly unpreturbed with the unblinking way she returns the look, though the mention of bracelet brings her attention to it with a tilt of her head and a considering grimace, obviously debating,"Working or unworking? Working I will need to get one of the techs to remove it, unworking we can pry it off here."

"I can give you wheat if you want, but wheat's not gonna grow in the soil here. Drainage's shit. High acidity. Tomatoes might take, though. Good sun. Unless you're planning on relocating." Bruns' thin eyebrows arch. "Working'd be better. I'll throw in a fish scaling knife if it's working. But I can always get a working one from one of your friends. If you're in a hurry."

Kai's not a botanist, clearly, to judge from the grimace she gives,"Not tomatoes. They already have some of those. Something else that will grow, then." there's a nod in the direction of the wall,"Reality is we're probably going to all be dead tomorrow anyways. If you'll stick around for a few, I'll go get the rope and see about getting it off in one piece." she offers as her attention flits towards the tech tent.

Bruns grunts softly. "Beans, then?" And then he nods once. "Be quick about it. I gotta get back to Coesbur before dark. If you're not back fast, you'll have to catch me the next time I come back this way."

"Fine." Kai agree's with a dip of her head,"Five minutes." she adds. Hey look, she can actually run with the right motivation. To the tech tent. Because she knows where the rope is and the bigger thing is pinning down one of the techs to pry it off of her without screwing it up. Though she doesn't come back to the gate immediately when she emerges, that she's got something in her hand and is rubbing her wrist as she hustles off towards the tents probably suggests that it was successful. The naked ring of clean flesh and it's pinpricks of blood blatant when she finally does circle back towards the gate at an easy jog.

In the meantime, Bruns has dug out the maps, seeds and a small scaling knife made from antler. The maps appear to be done up on hide. "Why do you keep those things on anyway? S'like walking around with a shackle on your wrist when you have a choice about removing it."

Kai offers the bracelet out first even as she eyes the maps in particular,"Stupidity." is the one word response,"I don't know. It used to remind me that there was something before.. this. That maybe my mom still gave a shit. Now it doesn't matter. Whatever's going on up there doesn't matter." there's a nod towards the maps and seeds,"That stuff matters."

Bruns looks at her for a moment, then grunts softly, "Smart girl. Sentiment ain't gonna keep you alive down here." He tosses over the seeds, then flips the bone knife (with sheath) around for her to take. "Maps are based on how I travel. So I'd add a couple hours to each of the routes at least. Maybe as much as a day to Polis." He hands over two maps printed on hides. They note all the settlements within six days of walking from Coesbur.

Kai accepts them, shoving the seeds into one of her pockets and accepting the knife, trading rope for the maps and can't quite resist turning her attention to them immediately,"No, it's not." going to keep them alive,"Neither's this place, long term. But one crisis at a time." there's a faint smile from the girl as she nods and steps back,"If you come back before we're wiped out, mostly I've been outside the walls. The wall will mostly listen to me, even if some of them are too dumb to realize that shooting at the guys who don't hate us is a great way to die faster."

"Right now you're a bunch of kids who mostly haven't even blooded. S'why no one's come at you yet. But if you're stupid, that ain't gonna last. So…try not to be stupid?" Sage advice. "No one wants war. But we'll go to war if there's no other chance. It don't matter how many guns you have. You'll lose. You might not lose right away, but sooner or later, there'll be none of you left. And I think that'd be a shame. Cause you've already survived a lot."

"They're already coming." Kai grunts,"They think we dropped that ship on a village, even though we don't have control of the damned things and that was a good chunk of people including some of our families dead there too. And apparently it doesn't matter what we say about it because none of us is heda.. so we're all going to be murdered for it anyways." her gaze shifts back to the wall and then to him with a faint smile that doesn't reach those dead eyes,"The chances of this lot surviving tomorrow are statistically insignificant. But I'm sure you've already noticed that. I'm just trying to keep them alive." she gestures with the map,"The likelihood of running the blockade, making it to wherever the heda is, and not dying before getting to speak to them is even less likely, but you're right.. we're fighting a losing battle here and someone's got to try something. I've heard the name Indra. You don't owe me nothing, but if you can tell me which of these settlements that heda might be found in.. it might just be the only chance I have at keeping these idiots alive a little longer."

Bruns listens and doesn't respond right away. He just sucks air between his teeth, as he's apt to do when he's thinking. "If you go marching to Tondc," subtle way of giving her the information, "…and you've got no authority, Indra isn't going to listen to you. You gotta be anointed by your people. She's gotta know that what you tell your people to do will be followed. Otherwise, s'just words."

Kai smirks,"And there's the problem, yeh. This lot isn't here because they're good at playing follow the leader." there's a salute from her,"Thank you." she elects to add, shoving the maps under one arm so she can rub her freshly naked wrist and seemingly intent on slipping off again.

"Hope it helps." Bruns seems to mean that, even if there's not a lot of emotion in his voice. He pauses a moment, then reaches down and hefts his bag up onto his back. He upnods, then turns to walk past the gates.
