Day 026: Operation Camelback
Summary: Some of the Delinquents come to Stone's call to try and break the blockade and bring back water for soon to be dangerously thirsty Delinquent Camp. The blockade Grounders make them pay for the water in blood and the death of four of their people.

Afternoon of Day 26

It's into the afternoon of Day 27, and it's a cool, drizzly day in Pooh Corner. Great weather to go out and get shot full of arrows trying to save the asses of a bunch of people who didn't volunteer to help. But such is the path of the heroes. Or at least those who got guilted or inspired into joining the Boy Scout on this crazy venture. Now here they're all gathering before the gate, the gigantic Stone waiting for the gathering of those who've sent word and any others who wish to come at the last moment. He's in his usual cargo vest and Cadet pants, a few mags of ammo tucked away for the two rifles slung over his thick bare shoulder, a grounder sword across his back, thick club at his hip, and knife at riding his other. His various scars and still-healing wounds covered in case of mud and blood and infection, leaving him looking like a quarter-mummy.

He looks more serious than most ever see him. Less the jovial Boy Scout and more the soldier waiting for war. Which… ya know, is apt. As other's start gathering, his voice is rolling out loudly, less resonant than it used to be, but less horror-movie gravelly than it's been while his arrow through the throat has been healing. "K, everyone gather in and catch up anyone else who gets here late. We're gonna be makin' a run for the caves. We're gonna be movin' fast as we can while still tryin' to stay quiet. And we're gonna be takin' as much back as we can in these." A thick arm points to a big stack of various sorts of containers, some of which don't look like they'd hold water that well, but might at least get a little bit back in them. "When the Grounders find us. Note the when, not the if, we immediately seek cover, priority to protect the non-combatants comin' along to carry. Hunker down and try to identify. If there's a small force, we engage as fast as possible and when they're down, we run. If it's a large force, the guns will hold off while the other's retreat at mid-pace and we'll try to keep up in a steady retreating battle. Listen out for warnings and commands because all of these plans will go to crap as soon as we get into a fight, but above all, try to survive all. No one gets left behind as far as I'm concerned." Though the reality can sometimes not meet that hope and he tries (and fails) not to let it show.

Pale white would stand out, and that is what is expected of Shi, but this day, she is dressed in grey and the hood that covered her face and hair has been blacked with a mix of dye/mud/grass and anything to change the white to a muddy green. This covers everything but her eyes and the rest of her is hidden under layers of clothing and the bindings she uses. She is carrying the smallest of the rifles that can be found crossed her back with an empty gathering bag across her front. As normal she has her knife tucked into her left boot and another in her right. With her hands in her pockets and staying out of the way, she waits near Stone and Ari as others arrive.

Cameron is in his usual warrior garb, his holy grounder armor, with his knife tucked into his belt along with his pistol, and his grounder sword hanging at his side. And a rifle, which is new. Cameron listens to Stone's instructions and gives a serious nod of his head, but otherwise has nothing to add for the moment.

Ariadne is standing near Shi and Stone. She has her bow and a quiver of arrows slung over her left shoulder. She's wearing a few layers of clothes as at least some protection from the thick underbrush, and anything that happens to head toward her body at high velocities. There is a knife peeking out of her back pocket, and her hands are shoved deep in her front pockets. She nods as Stone speaks and then glances around to the others present.

Morgan actually put his shirt on for this. Since they're going to be wandering through the woods, the thing fabric will help protect against branches and whatnot. He's got his sword of course and is taking stock of who else is coming with them. With a carefully neutral expression, he's watching Stone.

Max's not dressed in his new fatigues but instead in his old let's-go-get-stabbed clothing, the original ones he had from the dropship. One leg is torn where the ax got him, the shirt torn in several places where arrows got him. Then he has a jacket over it, the only real protection. He's got his two knives with him, and that makeshift bag with the red cross on the side that he keeps bandages and things in. He stands nearish to Reno and says, "Time to see what the outside world is like," and gives him a bit of a shoulder bump.

Probably the second least likely person to come on a suicide mission like this is Asher. The first least likely of course is Cassandra. Still, Asher has decided to join them, for reasons he has decided not to share with anyone who has asked up to this point. He's wearing what he always wears, though his usual t-shirt has been replaced with a thicker grounder hide shirt. The grounder shirt appears to require being tied up, which it isn't currently, so he's exposing more chest and abs than he would normally. Luckily there are no swooning ladies about or they might… you know… swoon.

He's got his grounder axe at his hip, and his grounder sword on his back. He has a grounder knife as well as several of his home made shivs. Finally, there's a rifle slung over one shoulder. The bandage that had been covering his gaping neck wound is still present, though it appears to not need changing. He was in time for Stone's speech, though he doesn't seem to have much to say. "Get water. Come back, don't die. Sounds easy enough." Right. Easy.

It's as if Ruth only upgrades when everyone else does, though to the weapons they discard once they find new shinies. As she'd been too weak to hold a gun these past few weeks, let alone learn to use it, in her left hand is tightly gripped a spear of moderate make. She makes use of it now as a walking stick of sorts, giving care to where her feet fall. She doesn't seem to want to die. In her left is a container to fill with water. She's dressed as she was when they landed, even still; however, the black cloth has become stiff with caked… blood? Dirt? It's impossible to tell. She's been oddly quiet in setting out, though has watched the others closely since their departure from camp.

Reno was bumped. He was still wearing drab grey layers that have never seen combat, or barely the outdoors even. A finger nudged his frames up into place as he looked with anticipation and trepidation at the verdant path ahead. Hell he even brought a jar with holes in it for samples of other things they might find. He looked apt to collect water, nature, and any other form of unwarranted trouble on the trip. He had a backpack with various things that he thought might be helpful on the fly from the tech tent, but otherwise packed light having done the calculations of the weight of water over distance divided by exponential fatigue and- well it was really better not to start encumbered. He did give his brother a nervous but growing grin with a nos to let him know he was alright. Stone was on a roll and it'd be rude to interrupt after all so the kid stayed quiet.

Stone let his dark eyes slide over each person who showed through his speech, giving nods to each, smiles for some, a gentle touch on the shoulder and small of the back for Ari and Shi. It's Asher who gives the big ex-C a brief pause, eyebrows arching up, but a respectful nod given the occasional trouble-maker's way, but after the speech, in passing him towards the containers, he's muttering. "Glad to have you here." Whether that makes the guy turn right around and leave them, the Boy Scout's moving on to start loading himself up with bags and cans for water, calling out again for the others in the somewhat gravelly rasp. "Come load up all. Try to cut down any clangin' with cloth between, don't overbalance yourself cause we need to be able to move, and be ready to drop some of the crappier containers if you have to in order to survive, but protect the good skins and such. "Cameron's gonna be our lead scout. Keep your eye on him, move as close to how he moves as you can, step where he steps (or at least the person in front of you). Can't say a group this big is gonna have a heck of a lot of chance to do this thing stealthy, but the longer we go without a fight, the better." We move out in two minutes!"

Cameron heads over to load up with containers, and gives Stone a quick smile, then moves towards the gate, ready to lead the way with his ninja mastery hopefully on full automatic.

The group sets out from the camp and heads out into the woods following the route that Cameron sets for them. Their trek won't actually get dangerous until they are 5 to 10 minutes outside of the camp, where the expectation is that Grounder scouts are keeping watch on the camp from a distance. Still, the first fifteen minutes of their journey goes by without incident. In fact, so does the next fifteen minutes. So far, so good. The only thing that should be disconcerting is this: They don't seem to see anything out of the ordinary either. No sign of Grounders or scouts.

It's quiet, too quiet, or so it goes. Max doesn't like the fact that there's no sign of the Grounders, and it's evident in the way that his brow furrows as he keeps an eye out to either side as they move ahead, occasionally glancing back over his shoulder. He's otherwise silent as they move along unless Reno says something to him. He has his water containers held together, held against his clothing so that they don't bump against one another as he walks.

Cameron leads the way all stealthily, and he doesn't seem at all pleased by how quiet things are, but he frowns, and keeps low to the ground and silent. But he's got his gun up and ready, just in case.

After about twenty minutes into their happy trek, Ruth speeds up her pace just a bit to catch up to Ariadne. She makes no attempt to engage the woman in conversation, likely in consideration to their situation, but she does offer the girl something approaching a companionable smile. It's gone just as quickly when she jerks her head about due to some sound in the underbrush. Luckily, it's just a mutated squirrel. If the other girl permits, Ruth keeps to her side for the time being. Squirrels are best faced with a companion, after all.

Once out of sight of the camp, Stone's surreptitiously falling back in the line of people to Morgan, murmuring as he passes him. "Keep hold of this for me. I might need it if this one jams." And yes, the Boy Scout looks very mildly guilty at this, and will probably confess everything to Grey and Quinn after he gets them all back alive. But right that moment, getting them back alive is more important, and so this is falling in with his favorite phrase. The right thing to do! For his part, he's moving immensely stealthily for someone his size, but he's keeping his attentions too much on making sure the group keeps up and together that he's not watching the forests as well as he'll need if they get in true trouble. He ends up somewhere near Shi, his foot and three quarters taller bulk like a protective meatshield to the diminutive pale girl looking out of place with a rifle at her back.

Shi has more than likely be placed in the middle of the group, which, while that is nice of everyone, also means she can't see much around the larger forms around her. Her violet eyes peek out the sides of the group from time to time, noting something of interest that she might pick up when and if there is time. But as there is the sound of wild life, she is staying relaxed, for her understanding if there is nothing to be heard, there is something big out there that sends the wildlife running. When Stone drops back to her, she can't help a tiny grin up at the larger man, and with him close and Ari within contact she seems to be able to stay silent and keep everything on her, including the water bags silent… Someone will need to give her some candy if she keeps this up.

Reno has absolutely no expectation of what the outside of the camp was like, and like his brother, hugged the containers he was in care of. There was a quiet "Wooooah…" spotting some things that fly and occasionally bugs that crawled. It honestly took most of his concentration to move quietly with the group and not wander off and explore. The tech's eyes were huge occasionally elbowing Max and pointing to something.

Ari follows Cameron carefully, a few of the containers in her hands and her eyes sweeping the forest warily. It's obviously the lack of movement has her unnerved. A nervous twitch as Ruth speeds up and approaches, and she shoots a friendly smile in the other girl's direction before she turns her attention back to the surrounding woods as she moves. The squirrel draws her attention along with everyone else but she keeps moving.

Morgan nods to Stone as he takes the gun then checks to make sure the safety is off and that it's loaded. Satisfied, he follows Cam, trying to be as quiet as possible. Maybe being sneaky is sexually transmitted since he manages to avoid stepping on any sticks and snapping any branches into the face of whoever's behind him. And as they get further and further into the woods, he frowns more and more as they meet absolutely no one.

Asher has taken up rear guard for the purposes of this excursion. That figures. It is both a good thing and a bad thing really. Good because if someone does come at them from behind, he can gut them. And if the shit hit the fans, he can quietly extract himself from the situation. Win, win!

There's a bit of leeway for a moment where tree roots aren't attempting to trip Ruth up. She takes this opportunity to test the point of her spear with the tip of her index finger, absentmindedly stepping away from Ariadne so the light speckling the ground through the canopy of leaves above their heads doesn't speckle on her as well.

When Stone hands the gun over to Morgan, Cameron nods and gives the big guy a quick smile, and then he proceeds along forward. Still not aware where the bad guys are at, he's just gonna keep his sneak on.

Reno was used to being quiet. He spent 17 years working hard at completely not existing. Good news was that came in handy. The bad news was that was under the floor of a ship and not moving around in an organic environment. The rogue sibling did, however slow his roll while investigating some grasshoppery thing that landed on his shoulder. A hand swatted at Max's sleeve to show him the interloper perched on the sleeve of his hoodie that he failed to notice much else. This wasn't cause for throwing caution to the wind though and thus he kept to the path while investigating the bug he was coaxing to crawl onto his fingers to investigate. Well now we know what to get him for the Holidays. Good news: he is cheap to shop for.

Shi tries hard to stay out of any sunlight, it's just something that she has been doing every moment of her time down here, so as she moves from one side to another and leans down to pick up something of interesting and places it in her carry bag. It could have been a stone, leaf, or wood, it's hard to say as it's up and gone in a moment, she tries very hard not to be the cause of slowing anyone down.

Stone maybe should be paying attention more to what the hell he's doing and less to casting occasional shy, if encouraging, smiles at the pale Shi and tall Ari. Cause really, the fearless leader of this little expedition isn't on top of his game right now, and he's missing things that could get them all in trouble. Maybe he's getting a bit overconfident after early on when the whole group seems to be moving so well through the forest together, one quiet train of people on a mission. Overconfidence is never a good thing in war.

Which is good to note. Their quiet little jaunt goes entirely wrong about thirty minutes in, with arrows hurtling out from the treeline about fifteen feet from the delinquents. It appears as though several of them had been spotted by Grounder scouts watching the trails and paths to the water source the Delinquents are known to use. In particular though, Stone and Morgan were beset upon early, being seen first. Ariadne and Reno were also targetted.

Some of the intrepid water gatherers though saw this coming. Asher in particular was lucky enough to be behind a tree when the first arrow was loosed. He drops his water containers and sprints around the tree at the nearest archer, only 10 feet away from Asher as he was on rear guard. Asher, not one for hesitation in the moment launches himself at the archer, his axe coming down in a heavy over the head strike, burying his axe into the grounder's chest with a meaty thunk. Said Grounder collapses under the weight of Asher and the blow. He gurgles out some blood and then dies a moment later.

<FS3> Shi rolls Resolve: Failure.

"Morgan, watch out!" Cameron's first concern is for him, of course, but he's then turning to aim his gun off at the nearest grounder he sees, and there's a loud bang as he fires! But the shot goes wide, so he moves to try to put a tree between him and the others.

And this is why being a tiny thing among giants is both good and bad. It means that when the arrows start falling they don't take you first, but they do make Pincushions and Axe skin holders of those you care about. Shi drops down and rolls behind the nearest tree or log, but she is shaken as she sees Stone, Reno and Ari hit, instead of calling out she bites her lower lip hard enough that she might draw blood but her rifle is up and she aims.

No shit, there he was. Just walking through the forest, minding his own business, ready to put a few bullets into some Grounder heads when out of the blue, an arrow zips past his head. Well, naturally, that makes him jump a bit which might have saved him from getting an even worse injury as a crossbow bolt slices his arm. Ow! "A little more warning next time Cam!" Flicking the safety off his rifle, it's time to let out some of the frustration that's been building for weeks.

Reno was looking at the bug, really. He didn't even see the Grounder in the shrubbery. He didn't even hear them. There was a lopsided grin on his face as he showed his brother the bright green leggy bug he found. When he moved his arm, apparently that's what archers refer to as an 'open shot' and they took it. He didn't even realised it happened. There was a look of panic, and that quickly gave way to fear. The bug flew off and his hand went to the arrow stabbing out of his chest, and he tried hard to avoid the instinct of pulling it out. He slumped to his knees and looked up to his brother with a cough. "Max?" It was all he could do to not throw up or black out. Everything for him went a bit blurry.

Stone was reaching out to run a hand along the small of Shi's back as they stalked along, smiling at the tiny pale girl … when the whistle of the arrow came out of nowhere, followed by the thicker whoosh of the spear. He was moving as soon as the sound came, stepping in front of Shi, blocking her bodily as he roars. "INCOMING!" Of course, it was his towering form that was the target though, and that shift in position probably saved his life, even if it caught him fully off guard. The arrow struck first, piercing him low on one hip, jutting out and leaving a raspy growl of pain escaping, followed shortly after by the spear striking him as he tries to twist with its momentum, catching it through the meat of one arm, falling over backwards bleeding profusely and stunned for a split second before combat instincts cut in and he was rolling back up, taking aim instantly while trying to find tree for cover.

No shit, there he was. Just walking through the forest, minding his own business, ready to put a few bullets into some Grounder heads when out of the blue, an arrow zips past his head. Well, naturally, that makes Morgan jump a bit which might have saved him from getting an even worse injury as a crossbow bolt slices his arm. Ow! "A little more warning next time Cam!" Flicking the safety off his rifle, it's time to let out some of the frustration that's been building for weeks.

Seeing Reno hit, Max immediately moved to grab him and help ease him toward the ground, the leggy bug entirely ignored and probably relieved to have been released. "Shit… I should have made you stay in camp…" he mutters through his teeth as he bends to try and at least triage the wound quickly to make sure that it doesn't get any worse. "That was a pretty cool bug there. We'll have to find another one," he says under his breath.

Ariadne is walking through the forest, glancing around at the landscape outside of camp when suddenly chaos breaks out and she feels a sharp pain in her chest. She lets out a cry of surprise and drops the containers she's carrying and reaches for the bow, pulling an arrow from the quiver in one movement. She's looking around at those with her with alarm and she moves closer to Stone and Shi as Stone is struck. She winces and notches the arrow while she turns to look into the trees.

Ruth immediately claps her hand over her mouth when the first arrow hits its mark, the outcry of battle causing her face to resemble curdled milk (not that they'd know what that looks like). She backs up towards the trees in an attempt to find cover, her spear held out in front of her as if a shield. It isn't a shield, though. It's a spear.

Looking around around, Morgan moved to the nearest tree to take cover against the Grounders. Then lining one up in his sights, he gently pulls the trigger just like he was taught to. And the damn kick still makes him jerk the gun and miss his target. Damn. Actually firing the thing is harder than pretending and going 'bang'. Well, now he knows.

"I —" Ruth is not made for battle; even though this isn't her first rodeo, she's locked up and can't seem to gain that initial burst of adrenaline required to join the fray. Her attention is split between the approaching hoard of grounders and the injured Ariadne, jaw shifting to either side with an antsy brand of reluctance. "Are you okay?" she calls above the gunfire, any semblance of quiet in her bearing and tone now replaced by a grit that makes her sound on the verge of tears.

Cameron looks out and takes aim carefully, and with another bang, he fires— and this time the bullet strikes true, slashing into the grounders neck. Cameron's expression is cool and calm, and immediately he turns and looks for a new target.

Stone takes a moment to assess the shambles of his group, calling out a raspy roar of "GET TO COVER!" before he's catching sight of an archer and doing exactly opposite of that, stepping out fully to start making a controlled rapid approach toward the fore, taking steady aim and triggering a burst to take a grounder Archer aiming at Ari in the throat and right arm. The bastard doesn't go down though, and Stone's roaring out, trying to draw attention off his teammates, ready to dive into cover as needed.

Max remains crouching near Reno, for the time being patching him up and keeping his eyes on the combat going on around them. He waits to see if anyone else falls, requiring immediate triage. This time, he's not the one charging out into the fray. He pulls out his knife and keeps it close, but for the time being remains watchful.

One grounder down, four to go. The one with the crossbow spends his time reloading, while the others continue their assault. Those who had thrown spears and axes switch to bows, and remain behind cover in the tree line. One of them, who didn't have a bow and instead is wielding a well made Grounder spear charges out at Ariadne and thrusts at her with said spear.

The other grounders seem less able to connect with their targets.

For his own part, Asher is running through the tree line at the lined up Grounders who are firing at his allies. He charges at another one with a bow and slashes with his axe as he runs by, leaving behind a huge gaping wound in the archer's chest. Blood flies and Asher keeps running onto the next one. That same archer is hit by Cameron's bullet and collapses to the ground in a spurting of blood. Still, Asher doesn't go for cover, he charges off at the grounder with the spear instead.

As the spears, arrows, and bullets fly Ariadne's eyes move frantically around to check on Shi and Stone, then she follows Ruth to a nearby tree and takes cover with her. She doesn't notice the second wound and first, but when she looks down the front of her shirt shines with blood. She mutters under her breath and pulls another arrow from her quiver.

Shi has taken careful aim at the CrossBow shooter, there is a moment where her eyes have flickered to find Ari and Stone, she shutters as she notices blood but that is all as her eyes narrow and she checks the sight. THe "Talker" is horribly silent as she takes a deep breath, waiting one extra moment to make sure she has a chance to make the bullet count.

Reno was shaking and trying not to make a sound. Everything was happening at once. Instead he focused on not moving so Max could stop any bleeding or make sure the arrow wasn't going to tear him up further. He'd never been a pin-cushion before. From a scientific standpoint he could say he definitely did not at all care for this and that the experiment was welcome to stop now.

Even as Ariadne joins Ruth in her safe little hiding hole, the slightly shorter girl finally gets that small bit of motivation needed to engage. She's not exactly tactical about it; at least, not in the heat of things. Gunfire is happening, arrows are whizzing past, and it's about as disorienting as being thrust underwater with no concept of up or sideways. She manages 'forward', 'thrust', and 'miss', all with the same flat-mouthed grimace.

Stone got a grounder's attention, but it wasn't the one aiming at Ari unfortunately. Seeing that one aiming at him, he ducked behind a tree and took a bead on the bowperson (see? gender neutral!) attacking Ari and took his shot. The bowperson jerked an arm up at the last second and didn't catch it in the throat, but by the gush of blood an artery was still hit and down they went, leaving Stone to track down another bow being aimed his way, leaving him to draw bead intent on firing first.

Once the delinquents get their bearings, the grounder forces are overwhelmed. Still, because they have a woman out in the field with a spear, the last archer remains in place, though he changes targets to aim for the large Stone once more. The spear wielding grounder, apparently seeing the bandage around Asher's neck flicks the spear at his throat, tearing the old bandage away and partially reopening that wound. No other grounders remain, there is a bloody field of bodies there instead.

Asher, having felt the old, mostly healed wound on his neck re-open growls out in pain and staggers back a step, his hacking motion with his grounder made axe slicing through layers of Grounder armor and into the grounders chest, but not enough to bring it down.

One Grounder falls and another Grounder falls. Seeing the remaining ones, those he can see anyway, aren't pointing anything sharp his way, he steps out from behind his tree to get a better bead on him. And this time he does it perfectly, giving a not so silent "FUCK YEAH!" when he hits the Grounder right in the chest.

Another arrow slices up Ari's left hand, and she winces as it does, but it's another light wound. It doesn't seem to stop her from pulling another arrow from the quiver and lifting it to the bow. Her eyes seek out Shi and Stone and she lets out a sigh of relief that neither of them were hit, again for Stone. Out of the corner of her eye she sees one aiming for Stone and that's the one she trains the arrow on.

Who would have thought that the tiny pale thing with the one violet eyes looking through that sight would be any good at such a thing. It's doubtful Shi did, but between her training with Stone and Grey, that extra few moments might have made a difference as the bullet shot through the Abdomen of the Crossbow holder and he goes down. A blink and then she shifts and turns to her side to take aim at the next shot. Of course that she went after the one after Stone, he's their best shot, right?

Max gets hit in the left arm with an incoming arrow, which pulls his attention away from Reno and the others to his attacker. Turning the knife in his hand, he takes the fight back to the asshole that put yet another hole into that poor shirt. He launches himself toward the grounder with a snarl. "Stop perforating my people."

Cameron takes aim, and… misses. With a hiss, he crouches low and moves forward to try to arrange to get a better angle on the guy next time. "Good shot, Morgan!" he calls out with a quick, momentary grin, before going back to focusing.

Reno coughed and pulled himself to his knees, and- no. ONE knee. He pulled himself to one knee (there we go), and with his less terrible arm and pulled the knife Max lent him. He winced. "What is WRONG with you people?! Seriously!"

Ruth voices a curse as her spear clumsily meets hard leather, both hands on the shaft. She sidesteps clear of Asher so he can get his shot in. She certainly knows well enough that he has a better chance of downing the grounder than she, but when he's not in a principal position, she executes a quick jab at the assailant. "Can't you just leave us alone?" she demands, her voice hinted with an understated growl. "We're here now! We're not going anywhere!"

Stone aimed too sharply for the bowperson's throat and paid the price when his bullet was wasted in missing by an inch. He gave himself five rounds for this fight, and five rounds he's fired. As such he's roaring out. "TAKE THE BOW OUT!!!" and then giving a ragged, roaring combat cry as he drives forward at the bow person, swiping sword out from his back sheath, apparently intend on beheading them if the bullets don't take them out first.

Morgan stays where he is and calmly squeezes off another round. Ping! Another hit though only glancing as the Grounders helmet deflects it just enough. Aim lower, Morgan.

Cameron takes aim once again β€” really, this gun thing is a lot less exciting then stabbing people β€” and shoots! And the bullet hits solidly in a Grounder's leg, and Cam hisses, "Take that you bloody savages!" Okay maybe it is exciting after all.

Reno took the one knife and threw it. HA! He hit… okay he didn't hit the grounder, but he did NOT hit Max charging that grounder more importantly. It even made an unimpressive thunk in the tree said grounder was ducking and weaving behind. The tech winced and rubbed his sleeve over his palm against his face. Man he should not be this tirβ€” oh yeah. He sat on his heel and tried to catch his breath. Everything hurt and the burning in his chest. One hand held his chest and the rod sticking out of it, his other fingers gripped the earth. He took shallow breaths and boggled at them trying to focus on anything else right now. "I'm sure you have someplace to be. Go there β€” Just…" His hand flopped at them in a feeble 'shoo' command and he just let them do. If he tried anything else he'd either get more hurt or worse, hurt them.

<FS3> Asher rolls 7: Good Success.

Those violet eyes flicker towards Ari and then Stone drops out of cover ad for the first time there is a sound from the tiny girl. "Stone!" It's clear Shi is very much pissed off now, but tries to calm her breathing as she switches her aim again, this time lining up the last seen bowman in her sights, another deep breath, probably muttering about things she going to do to a certain warrior when they get back.

Max misses the Grounder that he was attacking, who dodges his slash but manages to take the thrown knife that comes from behind him. Blinking for a moment, Max looks back over his shoulder to see Reno with his hand extended. Grumbling, torn between wanting to help those who were injured and seeing the fighting stop, he turns back to continue to pursue.

The Grounders seem to consider this change of events. Let's face it, there is no out for them here. The one with the spear seems to hold up her hands and stops menacing them with the weapon. Apparently she will stop attacking. The one with the bow calls out from the tree line "<In Trigedasleng>  Go back to your camp… We cannot allow you to pass…" Is he firing? Who knows. Did anyone understand? Also who knows.

Asher, has a hand to his throat, blood trickling out between his fingers. He has his axe at the ready, but is hanging back a few steps from the spear wielding Grounder.

The sound of the sword being pulled by Stone attracts Ariadne's eyes and she pulls another arrow from the quiver and aims for the Grounder that's bound to come too close to Stone for comfort, even if he is the one charging it. She lets out a growl as she steps out of cover to get a better shot. Her face is screwed up in anger as well, particularly as she hears Shi screaming for Stone.

Shi leans back slightly her eyes flickering up and around as she tries to see if this moment is a trap, but not seeing anything, she still calls out. "They says they can't let us pass…" loud enough for those around her to hear but she is frowning gently. "But… take cover." There is something in that soft voice, something that is not trusting what she is seeing, and her rifle stays aimed on those she can see.

Cameron is totally taking aim and preparing to shoot at the bowman. Stone called shoot the guy, so Cam's gonna shoot the guy. Or girl. Whatever.

"FUDGE THAT! ATTACK! We need the water!" Stone is snarl-rasping out as his charge started to abort, but on hearing the translation, picks right back up full speed at the archer, one arrow still jutting out of him, but not seeming to slow him much.

It's with both relief and reluctance that Ruth hefts her spear to her side, taking a few steps back and away from the grounders. "We already knew that," she calls over to Shi blandly, her nose wrinkled some. She rubs at her nose with the back of her hand in a single motion. "They don't want us to pass anywhere. They want us to die." She juts her spear in their general direction. "I'm so sick of it." This last part is added under her breath, but with that same ferocity. She's practically buzzing with adrenaline now.

Reno coughs and waved a hand and yelled up to Stone, "Yeah but do THEY know that!?" It was a good question. He winced sharply and gave up on yelling. He looked to his brother for an answer. Reno's never been one for violence and never really got the need. Less os now.

Ruth watches the calamity with slackened features. She makes no move to rejoin.

Shi mutters darkly from her cover, but Stone is the commander of this mission and while the tiny girl is more of the talk and watch, she shifts her attention just a moment from around them, and again takes aim with one violet eye once more shoots true, she seems to be good at hitting the body and another bullet slips into the chest of the archer.

Cameron aims in on the grounder that Stone is attacking, and while he misses, that's bad, the good news is he doesn't hit Stone, because that would be really bad.

With the one Grounder looking like he's about to surrender and the other shouting, Morgan figures making sure Asher doesn't keep bleeding is more important so puts the safety on and rushes over to him. And then everyone keeps fighting anyway. And he can't do much about the neck under such conditions. "Well, fuck. You need a big metal necklace or something," he tells Asher.

Ariadne looks as if she was going to stop attacking until she sees Stone go in to attack again. The bow that she had lowered slightly is raised again and an arrow flies toward the grounder that attacks Stone in return. She misses, but then she also didn't shoot with the confidence she has in the past. Perhaps the fact that Stone is rushing at a grounder with a sword is the cause of that distraction.

Reno pulled himself upright, pushed his glasses up on his nose and fished around in the bag for something else. It was a part of a ration. He hadn't another weapon or a want to commence in this and pulled out the empty canteen and held it up for them to see. He set the dried meat on top of it as maybe an olive branch? His hand was shaking like a leaf. He was tired. "Please, just… guys… People don't need to die over five gallons of water, c'mon"

"YIELD OR DIE!" Snarls out the gigantic ex-C as his charge completes with the archer's arrow whizzing past his ear and his grounder Sword striking a clean diagonal across their throat, spraying blood but not dropping them. It's clear Stone doesn't want to kill them, but war is war and they are in the way to their goal. There's been too much blood spilled already and if they go back empty-handed, it was for nothing.

It's not that Asher doesn't see Morgan's point. It is that he can't really disengage without getting stabbed. Asher takes a glancing blow of the spear to the chest, it slides through his grounder hide shirt and against his skin, drawing a wince. "Fuck! You make me one, I'll wear it!" he calls out, hand still on his throat. His voice has grown hoarse and raspy again. "Just keep back Morgan, you can see to it when she's down!" And once more Asher warily moves in to fight the spier wielder.

Max continues to press the attack on the Grounder that had attacked him, but his attack is fruitless once more. On the upside, he and Reno are no longer being attacked, and keeping the attention off Reno seems to be the majority of his goal. He can hear Reno behind him, and there's a moment where the words cause him to hesitate.

"Like hell I will," Morgan snarls. Letting the rifle swing free, he draws his sword since the one attacking Asher is too close. Plus he's much better with a sword.

"If we don't get water we're all going to die." counters Cameron to Reno with that even, cool voice of his, that might just be a bit irritating to some. Or maybe not. Still, he aims— and hits! Guns are fun. Then aims again.

And then there was one. "Surrender," Morgan tells the last Grounder, pointing his sword at her. "If you do, I'll make sure you live and take care of your injuries. And once this is over, you can go home."

Max hesitates, and the Grounder goes down in front of him. He doesn't look particularly concerned, but he does turn away from the fighting for the time being to tend to his own hand, crouching by Reno again. "Come on, can you stand up? We're going to need to keep going once this is over."

Stone's opponent doesn't yield of course, and he's left snarling out, stepping forward into their drawing of the blade, his own swiping out to bat their attack aside and then draw a reverse cut upward across chest, driving them further out into view of the rifles view. Once that one has been dropped, the giant is turning to the one still up and battered, roaring out as he rushes to join that melee. "SURRENDER! YIELD! STAHP! WHATEVER THE FUDGE YOUR WORD IS!" OH yeah, the Boy Scout is furious and covered in blood, has an arrow still sticking out of his lower hip, and looks like he's coming to cut the grounder's head off and mount it on their spear. Combat does ugly things to some people.

Shi pulls back from the action for a moment, she ducks down again and takes a deep breath, she turns her head from one side to the other and is still frowning as she moves her head above the log to get a better look. She clearly doesn't trust herself, or the limited bullets by shooting into the middle of that combat around the grounder. But she also is not letting her guard down as she turns to check each direction.

<FS3> Asher rolls 7: Good Success.

Reno winces and nodded to Max. Hey, he might not at all be cut out for confrontation, but he was doing a hell of a job of sucking it up for a guy with projectiles lodged in him. His arm looped through Max's and the fatigue was there, but they had to finish, go, and make it back. Yeha. The outside looked a lot better from the other side of the gate. Gate wouldn't be there long if they didn't do something though. He took a deep breath and said back, presumably to Cameron, "When they weren't firing at us we could have asked. No one freeging asks." He leaned on Max trying to stay out of the way of danger. He didn't look. He didn't need to.

The bow wielding Grounder had to come out of cover with his sword. He takes 3 bullets and a small cut to the chest before collapsing to the ground and bleeding out at Stone's feet. It wasn't even a contest really at that point. As for the spear wielding Xena like woman who can't be killed, she is breathing raggedly, bleeding from two new chest wounds. She is pale, most of her blood spilled onto the ground beneath her and yet she does not yield.

Morgan offers her terms and she coughs up blood and eyes him warily, "<In Trigedasleng>  I put up my arms before… You attacked anyway. Why should I trust you?" And she seems to watch warily but does point her spear at the ground. Death by a Thousand Cuts not sounding so good…

Asher managed to barely dodge that last spear thrust, and seems pretty shocked that she is still standing as his last axe blow to her chest leaves another spray of blood on the ground. "What… the… fuck…" he breathes out with difficulty. He watches the spear point to the ground.

When the gounder lets the point of her spear fall Ariadne glances down at her left hand. It's not the only source of blood, but it is the one that's complicating the shooting of the bow, so she tears a piece of cloth from the extra shirt she wears and she ties it around her hand to stop the bleeding, and perhaps even to soak it up so that her hand doesn't slip around as much on the bow.

"What's the chances of her going to rally reinforcements to have more people here on our way back with the water? Are we sure it's safe to not kill her?" Cameron's voice shows absolutely no hint of a problem with that outcome.

"Not a clue what you're saying," Morgan tells her. Looking around at the good guys, none of them look as bad as she does. Fortunately. "I didn't mean leave her. We're taking her back to camp. We also need to collect their weapons and armor. They'll help us defend the camp. I don't like the idea of splitting up though but I don't think she can walk there and back again. And we don't have a rat infested pit to push er into," he adds dryly. "So we'll just have to treat her as well as we can no matter what what they'd do."

Shi tilts her head to the side, but there are those closer, who seem to understand what the woman is saying, but her voice drifts in their direction anyway. "When you need something…" She trails off, her eyes flickering to Stone for a long moment. "Were they alone?" she asks him the question but her eyes move around to look out into the forest and once more ducks down out of the sun.

"All I got was liar. Guard her. Treat the fudging wounded! Hurry up, there could be more on top of us any time!" Stone starts limping as he slows his charge, sword gripped tight in hand, paling the dark blood-streaked knuckles and fury still radiating in his eyes. "Hey! Gunner!" At least he thinks that's the word he heard them call fighters. "Hooowwww mannnny?" He slows the words out, gesturing around the forest with his sword, trying to get gauge on how screwed this mission is.

Max helps Reno to his feet and helps keep him propped against a tree, then nods toward the containers, moving to pick up the knife that Reno threw from where it fell. That's his. He wants it back. And so he tucks both into his belt. He goes about picking up the containers from where they fell and hands a couple of empties to Reno. He's paying attention to the conversation around him, but he's not contributing for the time being.

Reno leaned on Max and peered at Cameron. Man the guy never strung five words together, until he was ka-bobbed. "What's the point, Cam? It's five gallons of water? Yes we need it. We really need it but we don't need to attack unarmed people to do it. Is this really who we are?! We survive radioactive… whatever to be that guy? No." He shook his head and let Max go get the knife back propping himself on the tree. "Miss Lady, No idea if you… ya know get this… You attacked us to get water. Just some water seriously." He pointed at the canteen and vaguely somewhere out in the woods. "We didn't come here to pick a stupid fight." He boggled and blinked muttering, "Shit, that guy is dead…" He was disgusted? Maybe mortified. Somewhere in there.

Asher frowns. "She said something about trusting us." Which isn't totally right, but whatever. It was close. He frowns and takes several steps back away from the grounder and leans against a tree, slumping down, his hand still pressed to his throat. This is going to suck.

The Grounder growls a bit and lets out a slow breath. She eyes Morgan. Then she drops the spear and waits, breathing with angry, ragged breaths. And then Reno speaks and the Grounder eyes her spear a moment, and then him. "No treaty. Sonia says fight. We fight." The fact that she has surrendered seems to be more about her not being able to hold the spear as she collapses to her knees from the blood loss.

"They attacked us. We're in a war we didn't choose to be in, Reno, fighting an enemy who wants to slaughter us all for something we didn't do after we did everything humanly possible to make peace with them. Who we are? What guy are we? We're the guy who will survive no matter what— no matter the cost or what we have to do in order to save our people. At least, that's the guy I am. Always." Cameron does nod over though when Morgan clarifies he doesn't mean to just let her go, but as he comes out from where he was and approaches, he keeps his gun trained right on the grounder. Just in case.

Not holding the spear is the important thing, whatever the cause. Morgan gets out the bandages and starts taking care of the Grounder. "Stone, decide how we're going to work this. Some of you collect their weapons and armor and anything else we might need." One she's been taken care of, he looks to see who else needs a hand.

"The problem is none of them put down their weapon Reno. She may have backed off and intended to, but the other told us to turn back. They would have killed us if we didn't." Stone's voice is hoarse from the angry wound in his throat and from the roaring in combat. He seems weary though as the anger and adrenaline fade, the wounds in his arm and hip (pretty much arrow to the meat of the ass really) starting to ache with endorphins wearing off. "That said, we won't kill her if she gives up!" He says it spaced out, trying to make her understand. "Our healer will treat her, we'll tie her up, gag her, bring her with us. Then let her go after we've done what we came for. Uninjured, gather weapons and water skins. Injured, try to get ready to move. Morgan, how is she doing?"

Max gives Reno's shoulder, the one opposite the wound, a bit of a squeeze and says, "I know it seems harsh. But it's harsh here, brother. Hang tight." He then moves over in Asher's direction to see if he can help a bit to get some of the damage under control.

Reno winced and said tiredly trying to drive the point down. "Yeah, Cam but-" He's quit trying to get his thoughts to stop screaming at him and focus. We had opportunity to make them understand. Give them - I don't even know.Wasted opportunity to actually make them understand we didn't come to fight. We keep letting them make us what they believe us to be. We don't have to live up to their low expectations of us. We're not on the Ark anymore. We can- nevermind. It's like common sense died years ago and left no children." He gave up trying to go for a reasonable discussion on the matter. His jaw clenched and the tech just nodded to Max.

After realizing that Stone's wounds are not treatable, she moves toward Asher in an attempt to treat his wounds. She speaks up, "We need water, period. They can thin our numbers or at least have us in pretty poor shape just by making sure we are all dehydrated. We did what we had to do to survive. They didn't. They attacked us, not the other way around." She is decisive about this when she says it.

Cameron promptly goes and starts stripping bodies of armor. "They follow orders, Reno. That's the central part of their lives. They are a strict hierarchy. There's no way to convince their soldiers not to kill us, to convince them of anything. Their— whatever kind of heda this Sonia is— ordered them to kill us. That's enough. And she seems crazy. The only chance at talking is with Fiona. That's the only chance of making them understand."

"She'll live. " Morgan tells Stone. "And the armor. Don't forget the armor." Ah, good. Which Cam is doing. "But she's not able to walk to the caves and then all the way back. So we either split up or leave her." Killing her is not even mentioned. Some lines don't get crossed.

The Grounder woman seems to let Morgan do his work. She isn't fighting. Again, more than likely this is due to her blood loss and sheer number of injuries than anything. She stares at Stone at his words and his spacing things out. She doesn't speak, but she holds her hands out to be tied, so she understands something about what he said.

Asher doesn't seem to be in mortal peril, but he's definitely losing blood at a good rate. Asher eyes the various bodies. "Sorry if some of the armor is cut apart…" Because Asher got a little blood crazed and hacked through people's chests with an axe… That makes hide armor a little less useful. It's the best that they have on them though. One of them is wearing slightly heavier armor.

"Whoever doesn't have armor is going to put one of these suits on, though if you're a non-combatant you might want to turn it into the armory when we get back… but I won't make you. But it's easier to wear then carry and we don't have a lot of free hands, since we'll need to get water." Cameron glances to Stone then, and to what Morgan says about decisions, and seems to be willing to let others decide this issue for themselves.

"Fine, armor too if anyone can find any that fits, or is easily removed. But we move out in sixty seconds, people so move it!" Stone's words roll out angrily, looking over the gathered with a frown at their state, jaw grinding before he adds to all. "We aren't splitting the group and I'll carry her if I have to and leave her at the caves unconscious with a knife to cut herself free when she wakes up. I may fall a little behind, but we keep moving. We need that dang water!"

Reno looked not angry with Cam at least but disappointed. Well like a disappointed coat rack. "That's messed up." He was tired and there was a long walk ahead of them. "Max can you help me cut this down so it doesn't snag before we can pull it out?" Because it was really the only thing one could do until you really sat and were able to fix things.

Asher lets Ariadne and Max see to his wounds, though his neck wound seems to be troublesome. "Don't worry about it," he mutters. "It was worse than this last time. I'll have Morgan look at it back at camp. Let's get moving." He gets up and starts off towards one of the downed grounders that is about his size. He went down early, and has several bullet holes in his armor. Still, it's something. Asher pulls off his jacket and then his shirt, leaving him bare chested. You are welcome Morgan.

He then pulls the heavy hide off the grounder and starts to slip it on.

Max takes a few moments to patch Asher up as best that he can, hoping to at least to stem the bleeding until they can get back. Once he's satisfied that the bandages are secure, he takes a step back. Then he goes to gather the remnants of his things. He nods to Reno and takes a moment to deftly take hold of the arrow and break off enough of it so that only a certain length remains protruding through the bandage. "We'll finish fixing it up back at camp." And then he is ready to move on again.

Ariadne looks over the fallen, and tries to find someone that's roughly her height and isn't overly stocky, then she begins removing the armor a piece at a time as she looks up at Stone. She sighs and begins to pull the armor on. She moves over to Shi for assistance with the buckles and straps. She says to Stone, "You gonna make it til we get back, boyscout?" There is concern in her voice as she watches him.

Morgan nods at Cam's suggestion and goes to find some armor that fits him. He could use some anyway since he's not the type to just sit back and wait for the wounded to come to him. When Stone mentions carrying her, he looks over the woman appraisingly then slowly nods. "Ok, we can leave her at the caves and make sure she can free herself. When we get back, we can tell them where to find her too just in case." There's almost certainly some in shouting range of the camp. "Your people will make sure you get better," he tells her.

Shi slowly raises from cover, but she is not happy about it, there is something nagging at her, but she moves towards the nearest grounder that she says a dagger she could use, anything small enough for her to pick up and put on, in her boots or in her bag and still move quickly she does, but she turns and starts to work on pulling straps quickly on Ari's new armor. Her eyes move to find Stone a moment and a quick kiss to Ari's lips and she seems ready to move again. One last quick look around is given though.

"I'll be fine, I'm just irritated," Stone growls softly to Ari, though giving her a thankful look for the asking. Even saying that, the gigantic ex-C is swinging his sword down to cut the shaft of the arrow off about two inches from his flesh, growling a little and muttering. "I can't believe I got an arrow in the tush!" With that, he's cutting strips of hide off something and limping forward to bind the grounder's arms tight with them, divesting her of any weapons he can find, and there muttering to her. "Sorry about this. It's no way for a warrior, but neither's dyin' out here to a panther." And with that, the giant is bending down, throwing the Grounder scout over his shoulder, and rumbling loudly. "Moving out! Pick up the pace people, and don't slow down 'til we're at the caves!"

But that seems to be all she can fit around her body, other than the bags of herbs, and pouches, but she makes sure not to over loud herself as water is the most important, the bows can be dropped later if needed.

Cameron quickly strips the armor off of one of the grounders, and makes sure it gets to Morgan, then wipes his hands off on his pants, and starts gathering up the rest of their loot. "Everyone ready to head out?" he asks about.

Their fearless ass-shot leader with the injured Grounder woman over shoulder looking pained is already on his way. Stone gave people beyond his 60 seconds to strip the dead, but he's knowing he's going to eventually fall behind with the weight of the grounder, so he's trying to start forward as he can.

In the wake of the battle, a pale-faced Ruth shades her face from the late afternoon sun and snatches up a fallen knife from the ground to shove it into the the pocket of the jacket tied about her waist. "Yeah," she calls back, glancing towards one of the bows as well. She gives it a small squint, side-eyes Morgan, and snatches up the bow to sling it over her shoulder as well. She doesn't bother testing the bowstring's strength. She wouldn't know how to do such a thing anyway.

Once everybody's been taken care of, and the Grounder is as comfortable as possible over Stone's shoulder without risking any renewed bleeding, Morgan puts on the armor, slips one of the knives into his belt then if one's not already claimed, grabs a bow for good measure since he went to Gideon's lessons on how to use them. "I know this has got to hurt but it won't be for long," he assures the Grounder woman. "Just till we get to the caves."

Trying not to look at their faces, Madelyn quickly works to help strip the dead of anything useful, quietly slipping any pieces of fabric that seem sturdy and useful into her own bag. She pauses every so often, looking queasy. When they finish and get ready to move, she still looks somewhat green.

Ariadne sees Ruth pick up the bow and she gives her a little wink. She walks over to the same Grounder that Ruth pulled the bow off of, and turns him over with her toe. She retrieves the quiver and when she turns to Ruth she slides that over her shoulder. "You'll need that too." She moves back to where she dropped the water containers and starts retrieving them one at a time.

Asher was silent as he stripped off the armor from one of the grounders and slips it on over his hide shirt. Cinching it in place with the leather straps, Asher's gaze filters across the others present. He slings his axe onto his belt again and moves back to retrieve his rifle and his water containers, hoisting them over his shoulder. The rifle he takes up, holding it with the barrel pointed towards the ground. "Let's get moving…"

Reno was a bit peaked. He had no stomach to steal from the psychopaths that tried to kill them for making simple trip to nature's commissary. He also was likewise spent trying to argue reason with Cameron because the kid wasn't wrong. The skewered technician fell silent and let Max gather their things and just took a moment to just save energy. His disappointment was evident. he'd been imagining the world to be a lot different than this at first look. He glanced to Ruth and asked, "You ok?" Being not alone in the disquiet of current events.

Max has no qualms about looting one of the Grounders for his armor. He doesn't even hesitate to unstrap, buckle, and peel off whatever he can and slap it right on himself, blood and all. Once he's got himself belted and buckled in place, he heads back over toward the others, grabbing up the water containers, both his and Reno's and then moves to depart.

"Can't I just carry the arrows in my hand?" Ruth wonders, covering her nose with the back of her hand as the smell of excrement and entrails starts to permeate the clearing they've created. She gags, but thankfully doesn't upchuck. "Thanks," she says in a tight voice to Ariadne, making a beeline for the rest of the group ready to walk the rest of the way to the river. "I'm fine," she tells Reno, her voice lowered and eyes narrowed a touch. "I just want to get to water." She's even more filthy now. Figures.

Cameron heads along quietly, doing his stealth thing to try to be as unobserved as possible, even if it's a bit pointless after all that gunfire.

"Allak Stone kom Skaikru, or however you say it by the way." A giant's gravelly throat-wounded rasp softly spoken to the injured woman on his shoulder, even though she's gagged and tied up and not much fit for conversation. He's moving along as quietly as he may, even though at this point, the gunshots gave way their entire position and he fully expects another attack to be imminent. Still, the big Boy Scout is too polite not to make that introduction, given the circumstance, even if he's sort of mangling the first part. Course, it doesn't stop him from glancing over at her before glancing back at the ragged, wounded group, and sighing out. "I wish you people could understand all we want is peace and what happened was tragedy that had nothin' to do with us." He pauses in his long-legged strides, making sure people are catching up, and nodding for Cam to take the lead again for their sneaking.

Max notices something out of the corner of his eye and reaches over to put a hand on Reno's shoulder, carefully placing himself as close to his wounded brother as possible, putting armor and human shield between him and where he saw the movement. Under his breath he mutters, "Something's out there… keep to cover." And he duly starts to seek the nearest trees to try to keep obstruction between him and whatever he saw.

Madelyn sidles up to Ruth, face scrunched a bit from all the effort of not hurling. "Hey," she whispers. "Wanna be not-puking buddies?" Her eyebrow quirks in an attempt at humor. At Max's comment, she crouches down in the underbrush next to a large tree.

Oblivious Cameron is Oblivious, perhaps he's paying too much attention to where his feet go and trying to do his best impression of a ghost possible. It's a pretty damn good impression, really, but it might be getting in the way of scouting out others. But! Then Max calls out, and he immediately goes to the nearest tree to hide, "All we want is water, you stupid floating savages," he hisses. Not that it's loud enough for anyone to hear, but it makes him feel better.

As Ariadne notices something out of the ordinary she quickly makes her way toward Stone and Shi. She places a hand on each of their arms and shakes her head. She doesn't speak, but she does point in th direction of what she sees. She looks nervous, and she's pulling the bow off her shoulder, and retrieving an arrow from the quiver. She stops for a moment, and then glances in the quiver to see how many arrows are there. It is then that she backs up next to Ruth again. She leans in and pulls whatever arrows are left in the quivery she's slung over Ruth's shoulder and places them in her own.

"Those arrows can be the price for beginner's lessons," Ruth pseudo-jokes once Ariadne has rejoined her and pilfered her new arrow stash. She's noticed the movement as well, but she doesn't make a fuss over it. She does grab her sling from her bag and load it with a stone, though. She looks resigned more than anything else, at least for the time being.

Shi glances up at the touch from Ari and she blinks, but clearly where she has end up in the group, has her not able to see a damn thing but those around her, but she tries Ari with her life, so she shifts a little to the side, slips the rifle back into place and let's her eyes span what she can see.

For his part, Stone was oblivious to the immediate threat with his injured package over shoulder being his quiet sounding board for why peace would be better. When Ari came up though, He was pausing, crouching a little lower, and trying to silently signal everyone to the cover of trees. Of course, it's probably too late by that point.

Morgan looks over at Max's warning then steps behind a tree, unslinging his rifle and flicking the safety off. "Damn them. I'm really getting tired of this shit." That Sonia bitch is going to pay.

Reno noted Ruth seemed to be alright and went about the walk. It was harder to be quiet when it hurt to move. Half the gathered knew that as well so there was no reason to bring it up. He looked up, finger pushing his frames back up onto his face looking to Max. When Max looked worried there was generally reason for it. Reno though had the instincts to stand perfectly still though. That's how you survive cadets on the ark. He was adapting, but hey, it was his first time out. He had the survival instincts of a deer. Stand still, and figure out which way to run away from hunters.

Madelyn looks around nervously, backing up farther into the underbrush, not sure which direction they're coming from.

Max's warning comes a bit too later since even as he's moving for cover, Morgan feels an arrow slicing across the top of his hand. Or maybe it came in time since who knows where it would have hit if he hadn't been moving. And the other missed, after all. Once he's satisfied that he's as protected as possible, he takes aim on the one that shot him.

"Loden!" Ruth's gaze follows the arrow that whizzes Reno's way first, as the owner of it was the grounder she'd spotted in the underbrush to begin with. "Find cover!" She backpedals herself, stumbling behind a thorn bush as she ensures she has a firm grip on the loaded sling in her right hand.

Stone was moving for cover as soon as Ari's warning came. But that was when the arrows started falling, leaving him to roar-rasp out as soon as he's behind a tree. "GET BEHIND COVER!" In case anyone's missed the need for such. For his part. He's 'fudging' up a storm as he gets tangled with the Grounder on his shoulder and is too much a Boy Scout to just dump her ass to the ground and risk further injury. So instead, as he gets behind a tree, he's gently laying her to the side before taking up his rifle. All of which took too long to do anything.

When arrows start flying, Cameron can finally figure out which tree to hide behind, so he scoots behind a tree. But only for a moment. He's promptly scooting out, crouching, and holding the assault rifle and taking aim at one of the grounders that shot at Morgan, because, really, that is totally unacceptable. He likes Morgan's hands and needs them in proper working order.

Ariadne backs into the bushes following Ruth while lifting the bow to aim. She doesn't see the target initially, but as the arrow reaches Morgan's hand she lets out a furious groan. She turns her arrow toward the direction in which it comes. Her voice is a quiet growl as she does. "Don't kill Morgan, assholes. Then I'll have to doctor!" She has a determined look on her face as she aims.

Max manages to get Reno to cover, but not before an arrow goes whizzing by. He puts himself between his younger brother and the oncoming grounders. If anyone's going to get hit, it's going to be him, since he's less injured. He stows the water containers by the tree and gets out his knife again.

Shi tilts her head as the first arrow hits, she mutters darkly and tumbles once before she gets under cover, her eyes move to Stone and his burden, and she moves in closer, dropping down as her rifle comes up and she settles once more. She is shaking just a bit more than the first time, but that could be because those she loves are well, wounded!

Arrows are loosed from the treeline to the east, about fifty feet away. Three arrows fire off, though they don't manage to do any damage. This time, there are no grounders running out and entering into a brawl. They seem to be keeping their distance. Through the trees and cover, bits and pieces can be seen of them to make out targets.

Asher hears the first arrow just after the alerts came out. He drops his water jugs and scrambles behind a tree. For all of his desire to get a gun, he's more comfortable running into the fray with a sword or axe or even his fists. Still, he pops out around the tree to take a shot at one of the grounders who shot at Morgan.

Shit. Arrows. Madelyn rolls and presses herself flat against a fallen log, trying to steady her shaking hands and deeply regretting her decision to come along.

Reno went wide-eyed and yelled "Shit! Shitshitshit!" Yup. That'll wake you up. He kept one arm curled to protect the wound he already had making for cover. Pissed a plenty the tech scowled at the treeline and tried to throw the knife at the man that shot at him first. "Stoppit!" Yes. He did not go to that class on the Ar: Battlecries 101.

Cameron ends up deciding to get back into cover, but it doesn't help when an arrow flies through the air and strikes him. "SHIT," he exclaims in shock and surprise, staring down at the arrow. The arrow that is stuck in him. The arrow that went through his chest. The fact that it hurts like hell occurs to him, but the fact that it doesn't hurt, like, seriously, mean she thinks he might be okay. He's also really pissed off now. For Cameron that makes him narrow his eyes and look really, really cold.

When Ruth hears the impact of arrow on flesh near her cover, she mutters something under her breath and gives a practiced swing of her arm in an attempt to sock her intended grounder. It doesn't work out, her stone going wide. She readies another stone in the sling just as quickly. "We'll be fine," she posits with a grimace.

To say that the Archer who is 16, has a great eye, is to give them credit, Shi makes a tiny target, and to get a arrow into her chest at that angle, well. But the tiny pale girl isn't thinking about that, for she is biting her lip so hard from crying out it's going to cause even more damage. But she knows what her being hit will do to certain people, so she hits it as long as she can by keeping her aim on one of the archers.

Max takes a moment to assess the situation, and then he focuses his attention on the Grounder that, conveniently, also focuses their attention on him. Coming out from cover, he leaps into the fray, aiming to stab and remove that particular enemy from combat so that they can concentrate on the others.

Ow! Bastard. Morgan rubs his chest where the arrow glanced off. Lucky he got that armor. Rolling his shoulders, he takes aim again, putting the Grounder in his sights.

"YOU MOTHER FUDGER!!!!" Roars the gigantic ex-C as his best friend and recently more is taking an arrow to the chest! He's stepping out full from cover to block Shi from further arrows and start an advance on the one who shot her as soon as a glance made clear the white-haired girl was getting back to her feet despite the wound. Well, then. Apparently angry Stone is REALLY angry now!

Madelyn manages to gather her wits and rises to one knee, lifting the bow she'd taken off of one of the dead grounders. She nocks an arrow and draws, aiming as best she can at the Grounder who is coming at Max.

Shi watches Stone move and growls out instead of keeping silent, "Stone get your ass back down! Now!" Angry is a hurting tiny Shi who is watching Stone be stupid, again! She has power in that voice as well. And pain, but power really.

Arrows continue to fly out from the trees, though again, only three at a time. The Archers seem to be switching targets regularly, taking aim on anyone they can see, though one does target in on Asher who lets out a burst of three bullets at one of the other archers, making a target of himself. Apparently 16 had a better angle on that than 17.

Reno was really rethinking this whole combat thing. There had to be a better way to deal with this and level the playing field. He hadn't skill or strength on them that was for damn sure. He did have an ability to try to make it- no. Yeah nothing he ever read about would apply here and there wasn't enough time to think with that maniac running ah his flesh and blood trying to make Max fleshier and bloodier. The tech was having none of that and bolted after him. Oooh bad move Little Loden. He was pissed though and growled in a most unthreatening manner, "Stay the hell away from my brother, asshole!" Huh. And generally he's the nice one! MAN if only he had a battery and a couple cables on him. Know what… noted for later.

As Shi gets hit Ariadne stifles an alarmed cry. She's raising the bow, and staying under cover, but she's making her way toward the white haired girl. There is more than anger on her face now, there is sheer hatred, and as she approaches Shi she hisses at Stone, "Get your ass down. The last thing I need is BOTH of you going down!"

Even as he's opening fire, Stone's growling out to the double chewing out he's getting and sliding behind another tree rather than continue his approach.

Cameron is all out of cover, and takes aim and is about to fire, but then an arrow slices by his arm, cutting it — it's not terribly bad, but he's bleeding, and grunting again. Okay, so maybe staying in cover would be a better idea, he decides.

In the middle of battle, lessons on how to fire a gun tend to be forgotten and Morgan jerks the rifle too much as he squeezes the trigger. Fortunately, someone else takes the Grounder down so he shifts his aim to the one aiming at Cameron. Because that's just not allowed.

Ruth just keeps digging into her stash of kept stones and loading them into her sling so she can swing them at whatever grounder pops their head up from cover first, like some sick and twisted game of Whack-A-Mole. She doesn't make any contact, but she's obviously doing her best judging by the focused furrow of her brow and the fact that she doesn't wince at the gunfire like she had in the previous battle.

Missed? Of course it missed. Madelyn swears to herself and nocks another arrow, trying to exhale slowly and ignore the frantic noises around her.

One of the grounders goes down in a cry of pain and a spray of blood. The other two, also injured, immediately drop further behind cover and grabbing their downed fellow before they abandon this fight. A harrying action then, not a fight to the death.

Shi relaxes just a bit as Stone ducks behind a tree and feeling Ari coming up next to her. She gets her shot off and returns the chest shot with one of her own before she groans and drops back behind the tree and log, reaching up to touch the arrow that is sticking out just below her breasts, along the ribs on her left side. If it's possible for Shi to be paler than she is, she is at that moment for moving sucked. But she tries very hard to hide her whimpers.

Stone's shot goes wide because of his sudden jerk behind a tree, but even as he's lining up another, he's roaring behind him. "ARI! HOW IS SHE?!" In a way that indicates if the answer isn't "fine" he's probably going to charge the archers and try to pop their heads off with his bare hands. Way to be an objective commander who cares about all his people.

Ari's arrow is loosed and misses by a mile, of course this could be attributed to the fact that her attention is mostly on Shi. Ari's bow is slung quickly over her shoulder, and she turns her attention to Shi's wounds. She does stay behind cover, but it seems she's too concerned with Shi's condition to worry about shooting arrows at grounders right now. She says to Stone while she does "We've gotta turn back Stone. We can't fight like this all the way to the caves."

With one Grounder down, Max turns to face another one, glancing over his shoulder at Reno as he moves he snaps "Get under cover and stay there." It's not without love, but it is quick, harried, and he's on to the next target, knife out and ready.

Shi takes a deep breath as she knows what Stone is probably freaking out and her voice is as strong as she can make it as she watches Ari's face, "I'm fine Stone…" She narrows her eyes at Ari, to make her stay silent.

Reno was livid. They were walking; WALKING! And not even jaywalking, jerks. The grounder that hit Max went down. That did nothing to dissuade Reno from going after him. Nerd Rage, party of 1 your table was ready. He tore after the downed grounder. He hurt. His chest was on fire with the broken arrow in it, but he kept pursuit until fatigue got him and left him swearing into the trees. "What- is- WRONG- with you people?! You don't- HIT- my fucking BROTHER!" He heard what Max had said and that was enough to make him stop and stand there swaying on his feet.

"Morgan…" Cameron eyes the grounders as they move to escape, deciding to conserve his ammo. "I know not to take things out yourself so would you like…" He winces and gestures at the arrow in his chest, wincing.

As the Grounders run away, Morgan immediately moves over to Cam to start taking care of him. "Of course. Who else got hurt? And is the Grounder okay?"

"STAND DOWN and form a defensive around the wounded!" Roars out the raspy giant with enough fury to make clear he is wanting to put bullets in their backs. "And someone check on the prisoner!"

However, once the Grounders appear to be running away, Max pauses and then moves over in Shi's direction, kneeling down next to her and works to bandage her, glancing over his shoulder to make sure that Reno does in fact stop. When he does, Max seems satisfied.

With Morgan removing the arrow and tending the wound— it really wasn't that bad, the armor helped a lot— Cameron rolls his shoulders and sighs, looking around. "Ready to move out?" he asks the group, though it's Stone who he's looking at.

Once everyone's been taken care of, Morgan looks around for the Grounder. "Stone? Where'd you put the Grounder?"

Madelyn slings the bow over her shoulder and brushes herself off, heading over to Ruth. "Hey, uh, can… can I borrow one or two of those arrows? I mean, if you can't spare 'em, I understand. I… are you okay?" She looks her over, concerned.

Max assists Ariadne in making sure that Shi is okay, giving her shoulder a little squeeze, reassuringly, and then leaving her in Ariadne's hands. Looking around and seeing that everyone else has been tended or is tending to themselves, he makes his way back over to Reno and helps his brother once more gather up the stowed water containers. "You… need to stop doing that. Stay… under… cover. I can take care of myself. And I have armor now."

When Ruth emerges from her cover by the thorn bush, she's flexing the hand that had gripped the sling. "Can we really continue like this?" she wonders, her chin lifted a bit so her alto can reach Stone. "Attacked around every bend? How long is there to go?" Madelyn earns a glance and a blink, an apology writ in her shrug. "Sorry. Ariadne took the arrows I had in this quiver. You'd better talk to her about that."

Reno was done running. The fight was pulled out of him that they were fleeing and that Max was well enough to say enough was enough. He was still livid, but exhausted. The back of one sleeve brushed at his cheek and he turned to look at Shi that'd been plugged soundly in the chest as he had. Max and ari were calm about it though and Stone didn't push any trees over a la angry bear so he surmised that she was going to pull through. He sank to his knees until they were ready to go.

After everyone's gathered up, the news the prisoner escaped amidst the chaos, and seeing the blood on Shi's grey clothing, Stone has gone from furious to simply stoney. Face resolute and jawline hard with clenching as he peers out over the trees, waiting for the second wave of attack to possibly come. When it's sounding like the treatment is winding down (maybe he even lets someone yank the arrow head out of his ass), his voice is rolling out again over everyone. "Yeah, we move out. Sorry to those who want to turn back, but we're closer to the caves right now than we are to the camp, and the fact still remains. We don't come back with the water, we've bled for nothing. So let's move. We're showing them that we aren't worth it. It will take time to get more people out here after the number we've dropped. So we have a window people. We get in, get the water, get out, and get fudging home! Let's go! Double-time! Help the wounded!" Yeah… are there any not wounded?"

"Do we have any choice, Ruth? If we have no water we are all dead in two days even if they don't attack us. All they need to do to kill us all is to make us die of thirst without so much as putting themselves in danger." Cameron doesn't sound happy about it, but he's resigned to it anyways.

Shi is bandaged and she holds still as the arrow is take out, but damn that hurt! Eyes closed just for a moment, she sits up as her ribs are wrapped tightly, just one more layer added to her form. She stands and gathers her things, a hand reaching up to touch Ari's cheek with a smile and another smile offered towards Max. She gives them all the thumbs up and stands to gather her things, wrapping the carry bag over her wound and then moves out with the rest of them.

Ari is apparently too distracted by the fact that Shi is so severely wounded, and it's obvious that she isn't exactly thinking reasonably at the moment. She tries to keep up, but they're just moving to fast for her. Then suddenly Stone scoops her up. She struggles and yelps out, "Hey!" But then she quiets, for fear of alerting even more grounders to their location.

Madelyn blinks. "Oh. Sorry," she mumbles, falling into step as they pick up the pace. She shakes her head, trying to stay alert and present.

Stone, freed of carrying a grounder, is there with all the rest as they try to jog along, falling back periodically to keep tabs on people, especially Shi, who does surprisingly well for the injury, and Ari, whose distraction with Shi has her exhausting herself sooner than the rest. As soon as she was falling back though, Stone swung in and lifted her up, his wounded bicep on the left arm glistening a little more with fresh blood at the motion, but his long legs let him keep up with the rest easier, and he's riding along behind Shi for the rest, intent on picking her up too if he has to. "This will be worth it. I promise it will." He's murmuring periodically to them. Even though it's clear that he's trying to convince himself as much as them.

Their increased pace seems to work out. Despite not being able to move quietly, the Grounders decided to hold off, or perhaps there were no more patrols. Either way, the group gets the rest of the way to the water without further incident. Several delinquents who had been with them (Gertrude, Jason, Anthony and Sara to name them) move off to the water with their containers at a quick and unhindered pace. After all, they hid every time combat started and didn't help at all with the fighting, they are totally not winded at all!

Reno took his jugs back, because he was injured and not dying and didn't want to be a burden on his brother; even and especially since Max has never complained. By the time they got there he didn't look so hot and was pale even for a guy who lived in a floor. He was sweating and felt horrible. So much water though? He could weep. It was wonderful. He murmured to Max "We should just roll the dropship here." He sat. He didn't have the energy to lose his faculties over the largest bath ever, and he really wished he had. Right now while the others took care of exploring it Reno set his backpack down there on the bank and rested. That he hadn't passed out a half hour ago was astounding. He did it though. He made it there. Mission half accomplished but presently his body was willing to go not further until he rested. Forcibly.

Max made sure that Reno got there safe and that he sat down somewhere near the edge of the water while he went about filling the containers that the two of them had carried there. Those that held the water best, he made sure were secure, and sealed as best they could be to make sure not to spill it all on the way back. The rest were filled as best they could be, and it would just have to do. Wiping at his forehead with one arm, he paused only once the containers were taken care of. And only then did he take a few moments to rest.

Shi reaches up from the side that is not bleeding and helps Stone sits Ari's down, she takes a moment to run her hand over Ari's face, just caressing and making sure she is ok, before leaning up for a kiss, this is before she turns and just hugs Stone as they are in the shadows of the cave and out of firing range. it's not a long hug but the touch of them both seems to settle the tiny girl who starts to pull the skins she was carrying out so that they can be filled. She is shivering as she moves, but she moves with purpose and as silently as she can. Of course while in the cave she looks for anything useful to stick into her carry bag, even if she is very quick about it.

Ruth doesn't have any physical hindrances herself, except for a few light welts and scratches on her arm from snapping branches and errant thorns. Once she spots water, she doesn't even notice these trifles. Her pace quickens considerably, caution almost entirely thrown to the wind. The spear, her bag, and her newly obtained quiver and bow are placed with particular delicacy on the riverside so she can wade in.

And oh, does she enjoy it. She completely submerges herself in liquid joy to begin scrubbing at her hair, face, and clothing with a sense of urgency. They're vulnerable here. She's not a complete fool.

As one of the few uninjured, Madelyn checks in with folks, seeing if she could carry some of their water containers for them. Sidling up to Max, she says, "Hey, you. Want me to get that for you?"

Ruth doesn't have any physical hindrances herself, except for a few light welts and scratches on her arm from snapping branches and errant thorns. Once she spots water, she doesn't even notice these trifles. Her pace quickens considerably, caution almost entirely thrown to the wind. And oh, does she enjoy what little water is provided. She crouches down to attempt a decent scrub at her hair, face, and clothing, all with a sense of urgency. They're vulnerable here. She's not a complete fool. * * *

Cameron heads up to the stream, and eyes Ruth a moment, then makes sure he's upriver of her, and begins filling his water containers promptly.

"Drink your fill while you're here," Morgan tells everyone then takes up a position where he can see if anyone's coming. "We don't have time to waste here."

As Ariadne is lowered to the ground, no matter how gently, you would think she was dumped because even though she's completely dry she looks as angry as a wet cat. She's glaring at Stone, at least for a moment before Shi touches her face. This seems to calm her, and as the pale little vixen's lips touch hers she's calmed considerably. When she looks back toward Stone she just shakes her head. She places a kiss on Shi's forehead, and then rests her hand on Stone's arm giving it a squeeze. She hasn't gone completely without injury, and though the chest wounds have left her shirt bloodied, at least the armor has put enough pressure upon the wounds to stop the bleeding and hide the wounds for the moment. She reaches up to touch the bandage on Stone's wound, and when it doesn't color red she sighs with relief and says, "At least we're all ok." It is then that she turns back toward the water and crouches into it in an attempt to clean some of the dried blood and dirt from her hands and arms before she starts filling containers.

Once they reach the caves and Stone is feeling confident they aren't about to have Grounders spring out of the walls at them, he starts rumbling out commands again, voice distinctly harsh and hoarse from all of this today. "K. Non-coms, work to form a line, fill up everything as fast as possible. Rifles, set up defensive positions. Everyone take turns drinking your fill from upstream, and if you have to wash, wash well down from us. We don't want to get boxed in here, but we're defensible right now. So hurry, but enjoy the breather." That duty done, Stone moved to set Ari down near Shi, a big hand reaching out to caress each of their cheeks, a big arm going gently around Shi after when she hugged to him. There's clearly something going on there, since the gigantic ex-C's setting his other arm around Ari briefly, drawing the two women into a hug as he murmurs some soft words to them. A gentle quick kiss is given then down to Shi's lips and one to Ari's cheek, and he's slipping away from them, unloading his mass of containers and such to the pile of empties people are to fill, while he stalks towards the entry way, looking for a position to surveil outside for any sign of movement.

Asher, seeing the water, beelines for it. He brings his jugs with him. The thuggish murderer moves off into the pool, a bit down stream from where the others have started to get their water and he walks right in and then collapses into the water. He didn't lose that much blood, so it's likely more exhaustion than anything. Plus, he gets to wash off twenty days of grime. He hasn't been here since that water snake tried to eat him. He starts to fill the jugs about two minutes later after he's gotten most of the blood and grime off of him.

And then their peace is disturbed. Some can hear it coming. It's a whistle in the wind, and the shadow of arrows raining from the sky. It was a predictable location to be found in. From far off within the trees, a volley of arrows is fired. The arrows scream towards the ground. Four people are hit, Reno, Ariadne, Jason and Gertrude. The arrow that hits Gertrude when right through his heart. She died instantly, collapsing with a thud, her eyes open wide. She never heard it coming. Jason's death is bloodier, messier. The arrow that hits him is in the throat, straight through the middle. He'd tried to dive out of the way of where he thought the arrows were going to be. He gurgles and coughs out blood. He gasps for breath. Anyone with medical training knows he isn't long for this world though.

And then, as soon as the Grounders came, they were gone, disappearing into the shadows of the trees.

And just about the time Ari expresses her gratefulness that those she cares about escaped with their lives she hears the arrow whistling through the air just a second before the sharp pain in her right leg. "Shit!" She exclaims in surprise as the water she is standing in starts to turn pink and cloudy. She looks down to see an arrow jutting from her leg. She quickly grabs the containers that are full and begins to move toward cover, although with a limp.

The sound of whistling arrows isn't one Ruth will likely ever forget or make light of; she lowers herself in the stream, tucking her arms and legs against herself rather than lifting her head to get a good eye on the assailants. In making herself as small a target as possible, she avoids the worst of the volley. She doesn't even have time to call to the others to do the same, nor does she witness the immediate death of Gertrude or the imminent one of Jason.

Madelyn drops her water jug and drops to her knees beside Jason, cradling his head in her lap. "You're gonna be okay," she tries to say soothingly, waving desperately for someone to come help.

Shi is just about to answer Stone, a little smile touching her lips just as the whistling starts, her eyes widen and she pushes the pair with her towards cover. "Get Down!" The tiny girl cries, muttering darkly as the dodge pulled at her wound and she gives a tiny whimper as her rifle is one more up and aimed at the cave's entrance.

Max was just about to reply to Madelyn, to thank her for the offer to help, when suddenly an arrow whistles by and strikes Reno in the arm. "Oh for FUCK's SAKE…" It's past his lips before he even thinks about it. And then he's moving to put himself between Reno and the direction of the inbound projectiles, trying to give his brother some cover.

Cameron hears that whistling, and he hits the ground a second later, rolling as he does so in order to maximize the chance of him getting away. And, amazingly, he doesn't get himself dead. "Eden!" he hisses.

Morgan has heard that sound before. It was the first time the Grounders ambushed them at the river. "Get down!" he shouts and takes cover. And then it's quiet again except for the moans of the injured. "Get the water and hurry!" Cause there's gonna be more coming. He takes a quick look around to see if anyone's seriously hurt and discovers that's an understatement. One body. One body to be. Shit. Keep an eye on the trees and his rifle pointed at them, he backs up toward Jason.

"GET BACK DEEPER IN THE CAVE OUT OF VIEW AND KEEP FILLING!" Roar's out the giant as he's catching the sight of the arrow just before it hits Ari in the arm. Instantly he's up and moving, trying to put himself between the girls and get a clear view from the front of the cave with some cover if he can, rifle sliding over the trees waiting for the slightest flicker of movement. Stone has had about enough of this crap and is barely holding himself back from spray and pray solution at this point, knowing it'd be a useless endeavor.

No more arrows, no more Grounders. They are tacticians through and through. The Delinquents have backed into a highly defensible position. The Grounders have left, though there is little doubt for anyone with any sense that they will be back before long.

Asher did what everyone else did. He took cover. In the water. It's like a second bath. When the volley ends, Asher comes up for air and scrambles out of the pool. He snatches up his rifle and moves to the cover of the caves with the others.

Scrambling up, Cameron eyes the dead bodies dispassionately for a moment, sighing, and then he pads quickly towards the cover of the caves with his water jugs. "The trip back is not going to be fun at all."

"You'll be okay… you'll be okay," Madelyn murmurs desperately as she cradles the head of the dying boy in her lap, trying to keep him calm as he chokes and writhes and bleeds out all over the small young woman and the ground.

Ruth follows in Asher's wake with wide, wild eyes and clothes soaked almost clean. Her pace suffers all the more for the weight of her slogged boots, but what's she to do? The Grounders already know their position, roughly; stealth isn't going to help them all that much at this point in time. Either way, each step earns a wince from the girl, and it's not from pain. "Ach." Once she's rejoined the others, she shoves her spear between her knees so she can knot her stone-cleansed hair at the back of her head to regain some semblance of sight. Hair is definitely an obstruction in this case.

Reno had been sitting there at the edge of the water, pale, wobbly, and just enjoying a few moments in peace when… *thok* "WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????!!!" It has become his battle cry. But when the order comes to get to the back of the cave he remembers Max's words to him earlier, and he allows Max to get between him and the Grounders, trying to get back out the way.

Stone continues scanning trees and is likely going to pop a mutant squirrel if it moves at this point. He's keyed too high, waiting for the next attack, but he does finally call back deeper into the cave again after said attack isn't coming. "Shi, how is Ari? And someone call up the status on the water! I want out of here in the next five minutes people!"

Shi rolls to the side as she slips farther into the back, coming to kneel out of sight and next to Ari, she mutters softly and helps the girl hold her arm still as she moves to bandage it, "About where we all are Stone, fine for now…" She reaches up and caresses the hair from Ari's face so she can see what she is doing. Shi is at the moment, doing well to ignore her own wounds, but when they all get back, and they will damn it! There is no telling how the tiny thing is going to be.

Morgan glances down at Jason but it doesn't take medical training to know the outcome. He kneels down by the guy and feels for his throat as if he's going to take a pulse. "I've got you," he tells Jason. And once he's located the carotid, presses in hard. It only takes four or five seconds before Jason fall unconscious so he can die as pain free as possible. Ever practical, Morgan goes through his pockets to take anything useful. They can't afford to be sentimental.

"Ariadne, do you need help?" Ruth wonders of the injured girl, her face set to be carefully blank as she observes her efforts. "I'm not as good as you at this, but maybe I can help." Her gaze darts from Ariadne to the line of trees by the stream, her hand reaching at her bag… just as she realizes it's not there. "Eden. Fuck. No way." She rises from her crouch just within the cave to stare at her belongings by the stream quite a few yards away.

"Sonofabitch!" Ariadne says as she attempts to pull the arrow from her arm and fails. She turns an unhealthy ashy shade of pale as the cave around her swims slightly. She answers for herself as she says, "I'm fudging wonderful, Boyscout! Let's get the hell back to camp!" She looks toward Ruth and says through gritted teeth. "Yeah, go ahead and try."

Madelyn gently lays Jason's head down on the ground as he breathes his last, wiping her face with her bloody hands. She doesn't get up right away, trembling and staring into space.

Clenching his jaw in a cold fury, Cameron nods in agreement with Ariadne's words. "We know they're out there waiting for us, and there's really nothing we can do but… Get going. Try to take a different route back, maybe, try to be stealthy again. Eden preserve us, but there's nothing else to be done about this. We can't stay here."

Ruth looks Madelyn's way as she crouches down by Ariadne, though she doesn't offer any word of consolation. What is there to say? He's in a better place? Earth was supposed to be their 'better place'. That's what the Eden Tree symbolized in the first place. She's caught in a lull of thought for a few moments before Cameron's words snaps her back to the present. Her face hardens in the process.

"We can go back in small groups. A little bit at a time so we don't attract their attention so easily," she suggests and she examines Ariadne's arm and tries to keep her face from direct view. A deep breath is taken as she wonders of Ariadne, "Do you really think we should pull it out? You'll lose a lot of blood."

"They're watching us. Splitting up just means easier targets and fewer guns to worry about," Morgan points out. "So no. And don't pull it out. Snap it off."

<FS3> Stone rolls Warcraft: Failure.

"We move out in 60 seconds. Get loaded up people. There isn't going to be a good way to do this, so we're just going to do it. Rush the trees, get to cover, and then fight our way back." Stone's moved back into the cave to start loading up his bulk with what water he can carry and still fight. "We can do this. Go fast as we can, but don't let people fall behind to get picked off. No more stealth, like Cam said. Get ready!"

Shi touches Ari's head again but with Ruth and Madelyn helping her, she moves back to get the water bags, these are slipped and tied into place quickly, the weight being taken, shifted to not pull on her wound and then the tiny girl is lifting the rifle and taking cover behind a lip in the cave, letting those violet eyes flicker over the treeline, counting steps as she looks up at Stone and nods once. Her features are set, but somehow the hood is still in place, so it's just her eyes showing.

Having done what he could with Reno's arm, which wasn't much, Max gathered the water containers that they had. Reaching out, he touches Madelyn's sleeve and says, "Can you help carry these?" He offers her one or two of the ones that he had filled and picks up one or two of Jason's before saying to Reno. "I'm going first. You keep ahold of me, and you stay behind me."

Reno mutters something along the lines of, "That was NOT NECESSARY. Go HOME," but it is rough and hoarse and his nerd rage is dulled for the moment. He nods to Max and moves behind him, a hand on his shoulder to steady himself as they make ready to make a break for it.

Ruth grabs a water container and holds it close to her chest, eyeing her belongings by the part of the stream out in the open. She rocks forward onto the balls of her feet, ready to sprint.

Shaking and pale, Madelyn gets up, hastily refilling the container she dropped when Jason was shot. She tries wiping his blood from her face with her sleeve to little effect, then takes a deep breath and prepares to run.

Morgan grabs Jason to put against a wall and arrange his body into something a little dignified then does the same with Gertrude instead of just leaving them where they fell. Course, then he makes sure Gertrude doesnt' have anything useful on her before he nods that he's ready.

Shi frowns at the distance and then at her rifle, she glances towards the "warriors" of the group and bites her lip. "The wounded can't all move as fast as others…" She points this out, hoping someone gets the idea.

Asher arrives from the Roleplay Rooms.

Morgan has been watching the trees while waiting for everyone to get ready but what Stone says makes him look over. "That seems like it just gives them some free shots. The ones with rifles should stay here and cover the trees while the others run for them off to the side. Then half the rifles follow and provide their own cover for the ones to leave last."

Cameron nods his head to Morgan's suggestion. "I like that," he agrees, moving towards the mouth of the cave and crouching, holding the rifle out and getting ready to go with the shooting things up business.

"I'd offer to stay for the first wave, but I can't sling that far," Ruth notes with a wry twist of her mouth as she too crouches in preparation to run. If she doesn't make it to the treeline, she deserves no pity. The worst she's experienced so far on this trip is maybe a scrape on her shoulder, and that wasn't even from a bow. "So, um, I'll maybe cover from the treeline for the people who get back? I dunno. I need to get my stuff, though."

Stone gives it some thought then nods. "Fine. We go that way. Though I want Asher going forward with the first band since there's too many non-coms there. If they close and try to melee, he's the best bet and can help cover from the group with rifle until to the tree line." He gives a look to Asher, waiting to see if he's going to balk at going on point like that or not. "We go for suppression shots until the first group is across, just keeping them pinned, and then the second brings up on cover and covers the last group."

Max and Reno remain prepared to depart, along whichever route they are directed, water containers in hand, slung over shoulders, in whatever manner they can manage to carry them, and fall in with whatever group they are directed to be in.

Asher was actually about to suggest something like what Stone did. He checks his rifle, stands and slings it over his shoulder. "Let's get movin. Give me as much water as I can carry for the run. I'll drop it when I get there. We need to get as much of it across in the first wave as possible." A beat pause and he eyes the others. "Everyone who's moving with me, let's round up here…" He motions to the area around where he's standing, near the cave entrance. This is suicide run.

Madelyn picks up Jason and Gertrude's water containers, filling them quickly, and heads over to Asher for the death jog.

Morgan just nods at the specifics on who should go when. Some of the videos he's watched on the Ark had good guys pinned down by the bad guys so they had to do something similar. Who goes when he'll leave to the Guard wannabe. Checking his rifle, he makes sure the safety is off then aims at the trees, waiting for the first hint of movement.

"Shi and Morgan. Cam and I last." Stone bites out after having taken a couple shots at some of the archers, trying to keep them pinned down.

As soon as the others begin running and the Grounders poke their heads out, Morgan squeezes off some covering fire. "No, Cameron first. I'll go last with Stone. Don't argue Cam."

After firing off some suppression fire, Cameron purses his lips: he really does not like that order from Stone, not one little bit, but… "I guess it's better to cover Morgan then he covers me then we run together." But it goes against the laws of gravity. Then Morgan overrides, and Cam hesitates, then gives a nod. "Okay."

"Ohhh," Ruth groans as the arrows start flying, her run becoming a lot more stooped and her steps less straightforward. When she reaches her items, she grabs all but the spear; the hand that had been hefting this weapon previously is now occupied by a water container. She shoves the handle of her bag into her mouth (???), the quiver over her shoulder, and keeps the bow in her other hand With one last doleful parting glance to the spear, she's off again.

It's with a dive into the underbrush that Ruth finds herself briefly clear of fire. She takes the time to spit out the nasty handle of her bag, find her knife, and heft it in one hand. She has good intentions right now, truly, but it'd be silly for her to mourn her own fortune.

Max takes off toward the trees, helping to pull Reno along with him, water containers bouncing and jiggling but managing to hold. He glances over his shoulder to see how the others are doing just as an arrow catches him in the left arm, again. "Sonofa…" He bites down hard on his lip and keeps moving. "Don't…" he says to Reno in warning. And then he tells him, "Stay in cover…"

"Someone needs to write a strongly worded letter to their mothers!" Reno insists, but this time he doesn't go off running after them. Mainly because he's too tired, the wound in his chest is hurting like hell, and with the added weight of the water, it takes all his energy to focus on where they are going. But for the record, his scowling into the trees indicates that he does NOT approve. But he does remain under cover.

Having cleared the clearing unscathed, Madelyn crouches down low and grabs her knife. She catches Ruth's eye, following her lead.

Shi slips the gun on her back and a hand is placed on Stone's side before she moves to the edge of the shadows and does what she can to be the smallest of targets.

And then they ran. Asher had loaded himself up with water. He used his rifle over his shoulders as an impromptu yoke. He attaches as many water containers as his broad shoulders will carry and then he sprints with the others across the field at an angle towards the path they used to get here. An arrow slams into Asher's chest as he's running. He stumbles and nearly falls, but manages to get the rest of the way to the treeline. Once there, Asher kneels, setting down his water. He remembers Morgan's advice about the arrow. He snaps it off a few inches from his chest and he leaves the gun, taking his axe from his waist. He's better with the axe. He can't aim right now anyway. So he instead runs around the trees and off towards the one of the archers. He may not be able to do much here, but he'll go down fighting. It's what Asher does, he fights.

The Grounders are all focusing on the runners. They shoot off arrows at the first group and then immediately switch targets to those offering suppression fire from their rifles. Already, it's apparent that the Grounders are drawing back some. Half of them move back 10 to 20 feet back for more trees.

Ari runs as fast as she can, but she takes yet another wound to the chest. Forget the arrow that's still protruding from her arm, this one is certainly less convenient and a damn sight more painful. "Oooowww! Damn you!" She yells as she runs.

Cameron is fast. It's what he relies on to get him through life. Being quick. So he runs across that field carrying as much water as he could with his gun slung over his back, completely confident that he will manage to avoid being hit. And once he is… then once, he's not. He cries out as an arrow slams into his chest just under his collarbone. He manages to keep going and get to the trees, but there he slumps down, dropping the water and pulling his gun around— which makes him cringe from the pain of moving while having a gun.

Max has no battle cry. He simply runs at the Grounder, full speed, and plunges his knife into the archer's chest with a sickening sound and a very surprised look from the Grounder in question before pulling it back out with a jerk and a snarl. He has had just about enough of this shit. He doesn't pause for long before turning around with a who's-next look in his eyes, choosing his next target.

Despite the fact that Ruth and Madelyn LOOK impressive sneak-diving towards the grounder closest to them, their joint slashing does little to faze the battle-hardened bowman. Evasion must be quite simple when your assailants are young women who are more accustomed to working with needles rather than knives. Oh, but do they try.

Shi is silent as she runs, she ducks and covers as she can and as soon as she gets a position where she can get down behind cover, she drops with a gasp as raises that rifle again and takes aim to cover those coming to join them.

Morgan's eyes narrow as he sees Cameron take an arrow and tracks it back to the Grounder who did it. That's going to be a dead Grounder soon. Now though, he puts the safety on and looks over at Stone. "On three."

Reno gets out his knife and holds it, a bit shakily, but remains under cover, trying to keep something between him and the archers, guarding the water, the precious cargo they'd come to collect. If only he had some wire, and some time, and some fuses, a large canister of… Gears twirling in his head of all of the possibilities, he still might be puzzling out just how to express to the Grounders in no uncertain terms that they could use a lesson in basic etiquette.

"This is fudged! This is fudged up the apehole!" Stone is muttering with only Morgan to hear him, taking his shots with care, keeping those grounders pinned down as much as he can. And as his final is going off, arrows are flying at him, one nicking passed his earlobe as he jerks his head to one side, the other angling for his heart, but his arm bringing his rifle up in way of it, deflecting it, but getting cut across the hand, letting out a "FU…DGE!" ooh, that one was close. The Boy Scout must REALLY be strained. The cut causes him to lose hold of his weapon though, leaving it swinging free and him having to catch himself before it thwacks him in the face. By that time, the countdown is one, and he's pushing himself up from how he'd fallen, roaring out. "ONE. TWO. GO!!!" And as he's rushing out, he's letting the rifle swing behind, big arms reaching to hip and back, drawing free the armory grounder sword, and the one from the fallen grounder earlier, one in each hand as he charges like a maniac, screaming. "SHIIIIIIIIP!"

Two of the grounders have drawn back and away from the fray. The melt into the woods and are simply gone. Where they have gone is hard to gauge. Grounders know the lay of the land so well. What remains are the youngest. They are the same age as the delinquents, cutting their teeth in this fight. Perhaps the older Scouts have left the battle to see how well the younger do. Or perhaps they've gone to get more comrades for the fight.

Asher is woozy. The arrow in his chest has him slowed and he seems to have him pretty off his game. Still, he rushes one of the Grounders firing at Morgan, slicing his leg with his axe. The Grounder had managed to get out of the way before it was worse. Said archer drops his bow and pulls out a knife to fight Asher with instead. The other two archers keep shooting at the runners.

Ariadne is dizzy, but she manages to break the arrow off that's protruding from her chest. She looks around for Shi and Stone and as Stone nearly goes down she scrambles to aid him before he manages to get up. She finally breathes again and ducks back under cover.

Morgan can't help but smirk at Stone's 'cursing'. He's so cute when he gets angry. And then he's shouting 'GO' so he goes, dashing across the open ground in an evasive pattern that seems to work since he manages not to get hit by an arrow. He doesn't slow till he get to a tree to take cover behind and then readies his rifle. Time to kill the one that hurt Cam.

Ruth gets out of Max's way a bit when he comes over with HIS knife to help her and Madelyn. When he makes a solid hit, "Ha!" is exclaimed, her grin broad. Not something that should cause one to feel sincere joy, but… it's been a grueling journey. Relief is a normal reaction to winning things, even if winning things also means causing someone else to lose life forever.

Cameron's head is swimming, really. He's having some difficulty breathing through the pain, though fortunately he didn't actually get a lung punctured, but still, with every movement of his arms causing him agony from that stupid arrow stuck in his chest, he sorta blearily stares out and picks a savage to murder with cold-eyed fury.

Shi has another grounder in her sights, that violet eyes blinks as she takes aim once more, and fires off a shot to the chest of the grounder going after Stone. When she sees Stone get across, she takes a shuttering breath and turns her sights on the next target that is moving to keep them pinned down.

The last group of runners make it across the field and the two remaining archers start drawing back and away. Still, one of their own is stuck in melee, so they don't leave just yet. But they move back, from tree to tree, deeper into the woods, away from the group of Delinquents. Apparently these youths feel outmatched right now. They had the advantage before, now it is gone.

Asher caught a break from the fight as the Grounder switches to his knife, but seems to need a moment to collect his wits. Asher hacks into the Grounders chest with his axe, but he draws back and away, behind a tree. "Fuck! MEDIC!" he calls out. His voice is hoarse and raspy from the neck-wound and his breathing is shallow from the chest wound.

Stone doesn't slow down once he hits the trees, the two swords slung back reversed against his fore arms as he rushes. No, the gigantic soldier seems to have gone full on crazy and is barrelling straight at the closest Grounder he finds on the other side, intent on cutting them to ribbons apparently.

Ari hears Asher and she dives at him as well as she can while staying under cover. She is starting to feel light headed too, but she's still moving!

Max turns from one target to the next, going for the chest again, as he did the first time. This time, he doesn't have quite as much momentum going, but the wound is still deep, blood mixing with the blood already staining his shirt and grounder armor. There's no joy in it, but it's clear that there is something burning inside the usually quiet delinquent as he sinks his blade in and then goes in for another shot.

Reno remains where he is, huddled under cover, clearly becoming steadily more overwhelmed and trying not to break down in tears as the fighting goes on. He flings his knife off to one side, to try and distract one of the grounders, and maybe hit it. Who knows. Blind nerd rage is blind at this point.

No, hiding behind a tree just won't cut it. Morgan steps out into the open where he can clearly see the one who shot Cam and fires. When the Grounder jerks as the bullet hits, he smiles grimly with satisfaction and lines up another shot.

Shi narrows her eyes as her bullet goes slightly wide, but at least it made the grounder turn and run and miss. So she counts it as a win as she shifts her attention to check on Stone and then with a deep breath, narrows her sights again and keeps aim on the fleeing grounder, just incase. And better than shooting into melee.

Ruth's efforts are starting to wane. She's tiring. Max and Madelyn are given tense side-eyes. "I… we just need to run, as soon as he's down." She's speaking to herself more than them. "We can't fight them all."

With the guy running, Cameron slumps against the tree and takes a long, deep breath. "Bullets. Four. Bullets." He briefly considers conserving them, but man, that grounder is running away, and that's a very inviting back, so. He takes aim again.

Once Ariadne has helped him with that arrow in his chest, Asher lets out a quick breath, breaks for his rifle, dives and grabs it in a roll, comes up in a crouch and takes aim on the grounder with the knife. He saw that move in an action movie on the Ark. Harder to pull off than it looks. He bellows out, 'Start getting the fucking water and move!" For the noncoms likely.

Max is not letting up. He stabs again, and draws his arm back for another. This one is going down, just like the last, even if he has to repeatedly stab him in order to do so. He's aware of Ruth talking near him and he nods sort of vaguely to acknowledge that he heard what she said, but his focus is on the Grounder in front of him.

Reno blinks a little in shocked surprise, his eyes getting as wide as saucers. "I got one!" The fact that he missed entirely and that it was the sword slash that got the Grounder in question notwithstanding, of course. And so he goes for another shot, teary eyed, bleary and strained as he is.

"DIE MOTHERFROGGER!!!" Stone roars out as he's actually leaping through the air at the grounder that was unlucky enough to catch his frustrations, slamming both grounder weapons down into their chest in a spray of blood that he rides down to the ground, tearing them free in one smooth motion and driving forward towards the next visible target. Yup. Stone's officially lost it!

Ariadne finishes stabilizing Asher and raises her bow to shoot at the grounder that Stone is attacking.

<COMBAT> Grounder4 has been KO'd!

The running Grounder takes a shot to the abdomen, but he was already dead by then. Morgan's well aimed shot slams into his skull and out of the other side, killing the Grounder instantly. As for the one with the Knife. He gets stabbed and shot and is killed as well with a gurgle of blood.

Asher's shot goes wide. What should he expect with some crazy move he saw in a John Woo movie or something. He watches the last two grounders go down, slings his rifle over his shoulder and starts to limp back to his water. "Let's move. Two of them got away, they're probably going to be back. We need to be gone."

Maybe roaring your attacks at people is a good way to alert them to your presence. Cause when Stone closes on that already wounded Grounder that should have been easy kill, they are managing to dodge out of the way of his swinging blades of doom. Of course, that puts them right into perfect range for others to kill them, so… yeah, that totally wasn't on purpose, but yay!. "MOVE YOUR TUSHES PEOPLE! WATER AND MOVE! WATCH THE TREES!" He might bend long enough to grab a weapon off Grounders in the way, but Stone's rushing forward intent on carving a path through other Grounders if he has to for people to follow. Yeah, this is not a moment of stealth yet. This is a move our asses moment and the hulking ex-C is more intent on speed than finesse until they've got a bit of distance and/or find out where those others that fell back went.

When her grounder is downed by Max, Ruth backs up towards her things and slings them across her back, water container held in a free hand. She doesn't attempt to loot the dead, leaving that to Max. She looks expectantly back at the other delinquents, brows raised. "Me and Madelyn tried," she posits, half-grinning aside at Madelyn. If any of these murderous teenagers are in their right minds after all this carnage, then their right minds are never truly right. "Come on, then. We have to get this water back to camp." Her voice is kept level and her gaze keen. The shouting Stone earns a withering glance, but on they go. Madelyn is towed along with the curiously self-satisfied Ruth.

One more solid hit and the Grounder is down. Max reclaims Reno's knives, walks over to the one that he'd killed on his own, rifles through for anything that he can carry, taking whatever he can.

Reno joins Max to trade water bottles for knives, and then they are off again, moving as fast as they can.

Morgan doesn't particularly care that the Grounder is running. He's had enough of this shit. Ever since they set foot on this planet, Grounders have been attacking them. And this one shot Cam with an arrow. As he runs, Morgan calmly tracks the Grounder and gently squeezes off a shot. As the back of the man's head spurts with blood, he lowers his rifle and watches him crumple. Take that. With a lack of other Grounders to kill at the moment, he immediately moves to Cam to take care of his arrow wound.

Ariadne moves to follow Stone, but has to stop and take a few steps backward to pick the water containers back up.

Cameron is going to be resting against the tree for a few seconds here, because he really, really wants to rip that arrow out, and he knows he's supposed to wait. When Morgan comes over, he looks up at him with a weak smile. "I can't believe they got me. Pretty good, too." Pause, "I mean bad."

Shi rolls again and damn that fucking hurts, but she is up with all her bags still attached, somehow, she slips the rifle back on her shoulder, moves everything that might make noise or make it hard to run, and then she is moving towards Stone and Ari.

The Grounders who left returned with two more of their fellows. They were off in the trees, a hundred meters away easily. Some saw them in time, but a few didn't. Ariadne, Ruth, Sara (NPC) and that other NPC whose name I can't recall. They didn't see or hear it coming. With meaty thunks, four arrows slam into four bodies. The arrow that hits Sara slams into her head, the other NPC takes one to the back, upper left side. He collapses as well. Ariadne takes an arrow to the Chest and Ruth takes one to the gut. And then, those Grounders, like the ones before who volleyed and left are gone.

The force and surprise of the volley has Ruth staggering back with a startled gasp. Though it's exhaled in short order, it's a shuddering sound that details that this is not fun. She came here to have a good time and, honestly, she is feeling so attacked right now. She finds a prop against a nearby tree. Good thing, too, or she might find herself flat on her derriere instead.

After Morgan takes care of the arrow in his chest, Cam shuffles up to his feet, picking up the water, and letting his rifle hang along his back. He's about to make off when suddenly there are arrows flying again, and he dodges behind a tree with a grunt. "I hate these people," he groans.

It happens too quickly to even get a warning off and then another two of them are dead and another two gravely injured. "I knew they were waiting for us," Morgan mutters. Not that they had any choice about what to do. They had to get back to camp. Ariadne is closest so he rushes over to her. "Damn it." He sounds tired. The death by a thousand cuts is sounding more attractive all the time.

Madelyn already laden with water bottles, quietly takes water bottles from the injured. She is gonna feel this tomorrow.

"GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!!! THIS is why I wanted to fucking move!" Yeah. That happened. Stone said that. Seeing Ari go down, something snapped in the giant and he stepped forward in front of Shi, backed them both toward Ari defensively, his swords dropped to the ground and rifle swung up again to face around the forest, looking for targets! "Someone tell me she's alive, and then we move! Like Now!" And was there just the softest mutter after that, in haggard, hoarse, throat-injured rasp of voice? Something like "Sorry, mom."? Nah, couldn't have been.

Ari falls forward to her knees, and swivels slightly as the force of another slices into the hollow just above her left collarbone. It split the skin like butter and lodges into the muscle there, and with her right hand she catches herself before she falls on her face. "Fuck! Stop fucking shooting at me!" She's screaming this at the grounders, as if they're listening. As Morgan approaches she falls back onto her thighs, and leans back so he can see where the arrow went in. She's dizzy, and the woods around her are starting to become blurry but she says, "My legs are fine. I can still run." She can, too, if she can stay on her feet long enough.

When the arrow hits Ruth, Max is reacting almost immediately, rushing over to her to make sure that the arrow is taken care of enough for her to move and so that they can continue making their way back to camp as quick as they can. Stone's bellowing is ignored for the moment, the wound tended to before he goes any further. He gives Ruth a vague sort of a smile and a squeeze to her shoulder. "We'll get you back to camp and finish fixing you up."

Shi is backing up with Stone, or is backed up, either way, she slips behind him and wraps her arm around Ari, and places a hand on Stone's back. "She's alive, we are alive, we have water, let's move…" It's said soothingly, almost like a calming caress for the big Stone, and she tries to hide her own pain and worry as she supports the larger girl.

Reno rushes over toward Sara to try and save her, but she's gone and there's nothing to be done about it. Despondent, hurting, and near the end of his rope, he numbly tries to pick up some of her things, and her water bottle, at least one of them, before making his way back toward Max. "Can we go home now?" It's a barely whispered croak.

<COMBAT> Max treats Ruth:
< Chest (Serious): successful
<FS3> Asher rolls Brawn+Brawn: Great Success.

"They were there the entire time, Stone. Where the hell do you think they went when they disappeared?" Morgan asks. "Setting up an ambush. And if we hadn't waited it would still have happened and you all would still be bleeding." But since it's not Cam bleeding now, he's not going to argue too much about fixing them up immediately.

Ruth starts to cry, which is never a cool thing when you have an arrow in your gut. Crying makes your stomach heave, and gut wounds… well, it's not long before tears mingle with bile as he wastes all that nice water she drank by spilling it back up onto the grass. It has definitely been a day. "Qui-ick," she exhales, leaning on Madelyn as she helps treat her. "Fuck. Fu-uck this."

Carrying the water, in pain, and weary enough to sleep for a week, Cam wanders over to stand by Morgan and look around, staring sorta blankly at two more dead bodies. "That's four. Four dead so far in this war. We killed what, six of them? Five? Those aren't good numbers."

Asher didn't even move when the arrows came. He heard them a moment too late and moving hurts too much. He's still holding the water containers and skins. He doesn't wait for the others. The sounds of the fallen are enough for Asher. The sounds of Stone cursing and Morgan arguing are enough for Asher. "Let's just fucking go." Four fewer mouths to feed. Gotta count for something right? He turns and moves over to Sara and picks up her water containers, slinging them over his shoulder. Then he goes for Billy Bobs. "Just take our fucking water and go."

Ariadne has an arrow sticking out of her arm and as she reaches up to break the arrow off she fails miserably at it, but then that could be because her fingers are growing numb on that hand. The arrow's still there, along with the one broken off and protruding from between the intercostal space of her ribs just below her right breast. The entire forest seems to sway now and she says in a wavering voice, "I think I'm gonna be sick…" She's turning that unhealthy shade of grey again, and she reaches for a hand, any hand, to help her stand up. "We've gotta get the hell out of here."

Somewhere in this pile of water bottles is a Madelyn. The tiny young woman does her best to keep upright and alert, shaking off the last rush of adrenaline. "Are we splitting up, then? First group booking it back to camp, dropping off the water, then coming back to help the ones who are having trouble?"

"I'm aware Morgan." Stone bites out, but he's bending down to grab up the swords with one hand, sheathing them while keeping an eye on the trees. Sighing, waiting for the latest wounded, or for the next attack, when Asher takes up more bottles, the giant moves forward to take some as well before coming over to help others get Ari on her feet, and then get the rest moving. There's a look in Stone's dark eyes. A banked coal-fire heat that's a little crazy, but he's keeping it damped as much as possible after his outburst. Trying to just quietly help the others make it back, defending as needed, carrying otherwise, and bleeding like the rest of them. A lot of blood spilled, lives lost, for something no one is going to thank them for when they get back probably.

Max helps those who need it as best he can. Being only minorly injured, he does his best to heft as many water containers from the fallen that he can, and help with those of the injured. It is hard work, and it makes him ache, and sweat, but he does whatever he can to make sure that as much of that hard-won water makes it back to camp as possible.

Reno does what he can to help, but he's injured and weak and mostly he tries to just keep himself upright. He has a shell-shocked look going on. His first foray out into the big wide world was filled with rudeness and entirely unwarranted projectiles.

"No splitting up. We'll make it back, even if we're slower. Cam take lead and find us a path through if we can." Stone adds with a growl.

Reno also pauses, just once, to scoop a bug into a small jar. He promised, after all.

Cameron nods, and though he's not as stealthy or fast as he usually is, but he tries to lead the way, and he heads along quietly.

Everyone always says to take a deep breath when the going gets tough. In this case, though, deep breaths are making things tougher. Ruth limits her pace, breathing, and her general existence to increments so small that she does not jostle the arrow still lodged in her gut. Wn her eyes are not clenched shut, they are instead wide and trained on her feet so she doesn't trip. Wouldn't that just suck. She keeps Max around to lean on. He's a useful fellow.

Ariadne is trying to carry the water, really she is, but she has an arrow in her left arm, and her right hand is wrapped with a piece of her bloody shirt. As she tries to lift the bow to sling it over her shoulder she sways on her feet slightly, but she reaches out to grab Shi to steady herself. The normally pensive Ari stops, closes her eyes, settles herself, and then when she opens her eyes she leans down to grab two containers of water. One with each hand. She winces as the injured hand closes on it, but she's attempting to stand very straight and still. She looks up at Stone and waits for him to start moving so she can follow.

Shi is helping Ari with her balancing and has a hand on Stone's back, she is keeping her whimpers and moans to herself as they move back to the camp.

Morgan does what he can for the wounded then climbs back to his feet. He stays up front so he can keep an eye on Cam as the other blazes a trail for them.

The group gets organized and sets out. Those last four arrows were the end of it. Apparently the Grounders decided not to draw them further into combat. They may have killed four delinquents today, but they lost seven of their own as well. It's a long walk, and hard. They've been fighting and they have injured. They get back to the camp, worse for wear, but still mostly whole… Well, except for the dead. The dead are not whole.

As they arrive back at the camp, Cameron's posture shifts into a less tense one, and he immediately heads for the cook tent to deposit the water he's got. "Four," he says, voice a bit ragged.

Finally back at camp, Madelyn collapses against a tree, sliding her body and all of the water bottles attached to it down to the ground. She thuds her head back against the tree softly, closing her eyes. She'll take off those water bottles eventually. Eventually.

As Stone comes in behind them all to the expected lack of cheering and hurrahs, he's sighing softly and offering up a ragged, raspy word loud enough to all of them. "It wasn't worth it. The blood, the pain, or the dead. But it was the right thing to do. Thank you all for helping do it." And with that, he's moving to help Shi and Ari presumably to the medical center that's gonna be having a lot of business before the war.

As they enter camp Ari doesn't exactly drop the water bottles she's caring but her fingers slowly open and they slip to the ground. She takes a few steps and then she sinks to sitting just inside the gates, and then she falls backward onto the ground. Her eyes open and she stares up at the sky. She's got her legs crossed in front of her, and as she lays there she focuses on her breathing and simply not passing out from the pain. For every drop of blood she washed off in the water it's been replaced with her own, and it's sticky and starting to congeal.

It is a damned shame Ruth took a bath before her injury. Now she's all bloody again. There is no working with that. At least Max's load is relieved by a concerned redheaded girl often seen with Ruth in the makeshift medbay. Stella takes Ruth to the hold with the help of a burly male who's half-bullied into it. Ruth herself can't very well complain. She is still staring at her feet while she walks.

Max and Reno make it back to camp. The first stop is to bring the water to where it is being stored and allowing Ruth to be taken to medbay, as well as Reno, for that matter, where he joins him later to make sure that the arrow protruding from his brother's chest gets properly taken care of. He's silent after the journey, and somewhat more grim than when they started. The adrenaline having worn off, exhaustion begins to take hold.

Stone's thanks fall on deaf ears as far as Asher is concerned. That was a shit show. He staggers off and deposits most of his water with the cook tent. Most of it. He had several of his and Cassandra's skins he'd filled, plus one extra container. Those he kept. The murderous look in his eyes dares the guard at the tent to ask for that water too. He walks back to his tent with the rifle he'd been using. Apparently he isn't giving that back right now either. He's like a wounded dog, angry and growling at anyone who comes near him. He also apparently isn't going to medical for further treatment right now.

Once the gate closes behind them, the spot between Morgan's shoulder blades stops itching and he leans back against the wood. After a few moments to just relax, he moves over to Cam to give him a gentle hug. "Get over to medbay," he tells him. And then more loudly "Everyone who got hurt to medbay." There's gonna be a lot of sewing going on. "Someone fetch Layla please."

Shi tugs on Stone as Ari drops, and then moves back to try and nudge the other girl. "Ari, I can't lift you, just a few more steps and you can rest…" She can't really bend down all that much either with her own wounds, but she tries hard to get Ari moving again.

Cameron returns Morgan's hug lightly, tenderly, and then he nods. "Yeah, okay," in soft agreement, leaning up to brush a quick kiss on his man's lips. Then he's turning and heading towards the dropship, trying very hard not to move his arms at all.

Although her face, hands, and clothing are smeared with blood, Madelyn reminds herself to be grateful that none of it is her own. She carefully disentangles herself from all of the water jugs she was carrying and hauls herself to her feet. "Is there anything I can do for anyone?" she asks.

Once stone's unburdened of his water for someone to take away, he's moving forward again with the girls. Shi's comment leaving the big guy bending over to lift Ari up as gently as he can, treating her like crystal about to break, even though the bending and lift causes a little growl from him for the wounds in shoulder and hip/ass. "We'll all be fine soon enough. And then we get to look forward to the real fight." Yeah, Stone's humor is a little grimdark right now as he's murmuring to Shi and Ari (who may be glaring about the lifting), but at least he's not swearing.

Morgan pauses on his way to the dropship to look back at Madelyn. "You're a seamstress right? Come with me. I'm going to show you how to sew up a wound. We need all the skilled hands we can get."

Ariadne isn't complaining one bit about being lifted by Stone, at least not at this point. She lifts her arms to wrap around his neck and her head rests on his shoulder. Her eyes are closed, and she's shivering slightly. She murmurs to Stone, "Fuck the real fight. I didn't realize arrows hurt so much. I'm hiding." Her voice would be kidding, if she had the energy to throw that much inflection into her voice.

Madelyn looks up at Morgan and nods. "That's me," she replies, rolling up her bloody sleeves and walking over. "Ready and willing to learn," she says firmly, despite the horror and exhaustion in her eyes.

Shi leans against Stone's side and just growls softly to the large male. "Not even funny Billy…" But she gives him a tired and pained smile as she shifts the weapons she has kept around her and picks up all of Ari's things to follow the pair towards the medbay.

An uninjured hand slips from around Stone's neck and it finds it's way to Shi's arm. Ariadne squeezes and murmurs to her weakly, "Remind me to stay home next time Stone's thirsty, ok?" She's still teasing, but the pain can be heard in her voice.

"Yeah, this war stuff kinda sucks. I say you, me, and Shi just hide up in the sniper's nest and make out for the fight." Yes, Stone just made that joke to Ari and Shi as he was limping into the dropship. First swearing, now talking about three-way makeout sessions with girls. What happened to their Boy Scout? Well, at least he has enough juice left in him to flirt, casting a wink down at Shi on stepping up into the lander, tossing back over shoulder. "K Morgan. Get your dullest needle ready. I know the drill by now. Don't mind the whimpering Mad, it just means it's working."
