Grounds — The Camp

With the removal of underbrush and a half-dozen small trees, there is now a tiny clearing around the dropship. It has begun to fill with detritus from the ship, including all of the seating, padding, and removable plates or bulkheads.

Several tents have been set up within the clearing, set close together within the confines of the surrounding trees. A small collection of weapons sits under a parachute-cloth shelter by the door of dropship, open for community use. A three-holer latrine is set up downwind of camp in the prevailing breezes, and a rough wall stretches between trees at the edge of the clearing, dropship plates and felled tree-trunks stacked up and lashed together as best as the Delinquents can manage. There is a gate at the north end, a single panel that can be rolled aside at need.

The forest immediately surrounding the camp has been cowed into near-silence, but is still vibrant and green to a people used to stark metal bulkheads all around them.

Day 23

Word's starting to spread, sure enough, and it seems to bring out Captain Buzzkill herself, who has largely been building defenses outside the wall in the time they have. At some point, she's managed to shear her hair as close to the scalp as a makeshift knife can get it, and where she prowls in search of Fiona it is with a purpose.

Fiona is quietly talking to about half a dozen Delinquents near where water is stored. A few look outraged, a few terrified, but none of it seems directed at her.

Kai looms up behind them. It's not that the girl has epic height, simply that the ex-C can't help but find a spot and plant herself until people start to shift uncomfortably simply for the flat staring directed at them until they move,"'s the wrong vote." she utters flatly, catching the look from one of the others present and turning her dead-eyed gaze their way challengingly until they fall silent,"Fighting's not going to get us out of this. Sacrifice might buy us some time but apparently it's only with Sonia's people, so it's fucking useless against the rest of them. We need to talk to Indra." statement of the obvious for a thousand, Alex. Though the words seem to be accompanied by a certainty as if doing that is actually possible.

Fiona shifts her stance to include Kai. "I was told Indra isn't much for diplomacy." She replies. "And it seemed like this seven people idea came from her through Sonia as the mouth piece. Is that wrong?"

Kai shrugs her shoulder,"Talk to Grey about that. And with us, no, but with a.. fuck, heda." it takes her a moment to dig in her pockets and pull out a couple of rolled hides,"I can find her. But I don't speak their language. You do. People like Elias, he can do the talking, if you can write down what needs to be said. If we fail, we die, but at least it's better than waiting for the army to kill us off." there's a glance towards some of the others before she grunts,"And you're popular. You say fight, and Grey says fight. And Stone says fight, and I say fight, they'll fight. If we give them the hope that this is possible. To reach her.." she's ignoring the others there, those grey eyes focused unblinking on Fiona specifically,"if people choose to work together we might have a chance. Or we fight and we die for a stupid accident."

Something Kai says visibly irks Fiona, but she also very pointedly pushes it to the side. "I speak it like a baby. Not enough to be eloquent on, or translate someone else's words. How would we do that? Get to her?"

There's an expression of puzzlement from Kai for Fiona's irk, for all that she nods with a grimace for the explanation,"Still better than what I can do. The idea is to sneak through the blockade. She's coming from Tondic." because damn if she knows how to say that word, but the way she shifts is definitely to single Fiona out specifically as she flips open the hides to show.. maps. Not 'Skaikru' maps, this is most definitely something made by a Grounder, and considering it's focus around Coesbur, a local even,"Tactically she has the superior numbers. Logic suggests she and her people will take the most direct route to come and wipe us off the face of the planet. A distraction mounted on one of the other fronts will help keep the current lot watching that direction and help slip through the blockade. If possible dressed like Grounders, so that at least maybe at a distance if spotted it's not going to be kill on sight. With the right words, maybe, it might.. work. Beats not trying, yeh?" the grey-eyed creature asks imploringly.

"You all might still need to fight here anyway, but I'm hoping that's all we'd need to do." Fiona nods slowly. "If we're caught and killed, or Indra kills us…well, we'll definitely die if we do nothing. There might be Grounders willing to help…you've spoken to Grey about this? What does he think?"

"You well enough to come?" Kai asks her, as if that is information both surprising and welcome all at once,"Stone's a better shot than I am, and with the other ex-C's still here, my presence will make a bigger difference on this.." she gestures with the maps,"Than here." she folds them up again,"Yes. And he says that camp concensus is important, that not having authority to speak for the group almost fucked the shit with Coesbur in the beginning. That no rifles are to go, and that I oughta find out who has Gideon's armor and get Cam to paint my head if I'm going to pass as a Grounder. He reckons it's worth the shot."

Fiona shakes her head. "Stone hates Trikru. Possibly too much to trust if we actually make it to Indra. We'd definitely need to keep it small. I can talk to my Grounder contact and see if he's willing if we decide it's a go." As to whether she's well enough, "I have to be. Out of all of us, I can probably fake being Trikru best."

"No, Stone would be staying here. He's too injured to travel and like I said.. best shot. The idea with the mine's is that a shooter will need to explode them.. he's our best shot." Kai grunts with a small bob of her head,"Elias will go with us, too. While it would be good to take others.. the smaller our group, the best chance we have of completing the task." there's a relieved kind of smile from her,"It's worth going, but maybe you should put it to the camp, yeh? That an opportunity exists but it needs the agreement of the camp. People will listen better if you say it. I'll totally go without that, but really, that's what's going to make a difference. The camp working together."

"Why Elias?" comes the curious question. "He hasn't gone on any of the previous diplomatic missions and doesn't speak Tridegasleng that I know of. What's his role?"

"Because I trust him." is the first answer Kai gives,"And he's important to me." is tacked on afterwards,"But also because if something happens and if one of us dies, he can fight, and he can talk, even though he cannot speak.. Tri.. deg.." she shakes her head and gives up with a furrow of her brow,"That." she settles for,"Grey and Quinn are needed here. The others I don't know very well."

Fiona's brow furrows, but something subtle seems to settle into a more relaxed set to her shoulders. "I want to know Grey is on board before we try to convince everyone." she says. "If we have a go, I'll talk to Tuan."

Kai gives a shrug of her shoulder at her brow furrow, the grey-eyed creature too used to suspicion when it comes to her to give it more than a passing thought,"Go for it. He was over near the cook tent having breakfast when we spoke a little bit ago. And I'm leaving that in your hands. My jobs simple. Get you there in one piece. I've done what I can here, and getting Indra to see reason's the only thing that's going to save our collective asses." she holds out her wrist, which had still born her Ark-band until recently enough that there's still a color difference in the skin of her arm,"I traded my band for these. Y'understand?"

Fiona looks down at her own. "I"m not even sure these are working up there anymore." she confesses sadly. Looking up to meet Kai's gaze, she nods. "I do." There's a pause. "Thank you."

"Neither am I." Kai admits quietly with a tired smile and then there's a small shrug of her shoulders,"Got to do something, yeh? Go find Grey, I'll be out on the wall or somewhere if you need to find me." she offers before she shoves the hides back into her pocket and prowls off again with her shoulders hunched.
